On average, how much space do subtitle tracks take per hr. of video?

I couldn't find this little piece of info. I just need a rough estimate because the sub tracks I plan on making will be pretty sparse - mainly explaining people on the screen, or other important data.

I've never created them myself, but from what I've seen on various DVD shrinking programs, commercal dvd subtitles usually don't take up more than 10MB.

They never actually specified DVD subtitles though. Different subtitle formats take different amounts of space. For instance a srt subtitle will be much smaller than a VOBSub and VOBSub's are smaller when muxed into a MKV file.

  5. Hi-

You say you're just creating a few? Then almost nothing. As an example, I'm working with a silent film DVD at the moment which has about 200 lines of dialog (English intertitles, with French and Spanish subs for the English dialog) in a movie just under 2 hours long. Each sub language takes up about 400 KB in DVD .sup format.

Subs require about 10kbps. For a one hour substream, this comes to approx 4.5MBytes.
