can i see a good difference between a low vbr of 1300 svcd and a highest vbr vcd of 1150..?

or is the difference only good when i choose for a svcd at a vbr of (1800) or higher.?

  2. At the same bitrate and resolution MPEG1 (VCD) looks the same as MPEG2 (SVCD). MPEG is superior to MPEG in that it has more features: interlaced source, multiple angles, multiple audio tracks, selectable subtitles, etc. But the video quaility is the same.

Note that the VCD standard calls for 352x240 and the SVCD standard calls for 480x480. For a DVD source you really want to use ???x480 to get both fields, this really improves quaility.

But to answer your question the higher the bitrate and resoltuion the better then encode (doesn't matter if MPEG1 or MPEG2). Now if you're asking about low resolution w/ high bitrate vs. high resolution w/ low bitrate; that's a matter of opinion and you'll have to play with things to see what looks best for you.

Aside2 - the resolution of you encode has ZERO effect on it's size. The size is 100% controlled by the bitrate (kbit/s) Notice per sec, so only the source run time matters. The size of your source and it's resolution have NO affect on the size your encoded MPEG.

SO, if you'r doing DVD rips I recommend:
xVCD MPEG1 (encodes faster than MPEG2)
352x480 or 480x480 (to get both fields)
    Best results 2pass VBR: min=300, max=2520, ave=from calculator
or use CBR to save some time. You could use CQ_VBR but it's really impossible to predict the final size of the encoded MPEG

  3. tmpgenc SVCD wasn't designed for low bitrates. if you wanna use low bitrates, stick with VCD. people have complained about crappy tmpgenc SVCD quality when they have been using low VCD bitrates....that's not gonna work.
