cd's hold roughly 650 meb of data

dvd disc hold 4.2 gigabyte of data , thats 7 cd's

    a double layer dvd holds 8.4 gb data = 14 cd's

thats the major difference, its the same technology carried to a higher degree. after that its sectoring, file allocation, type of data involved and read speeds have to be much higher to read the greater amount of data

whats the difference between a single cylinder gas engine and a 10 cylinder 40 valve fuel injected 600 hp engine. ?

    Interesting analogy.

VCDs also use MPEG-1 format with 44.1Khz audio, while a DVD uses MPEG-2 most times with 48Khz audio.

  5. It makes sense to watch VCD on a 3.5" display on PDA or portable player with solid state memory.

It makes sense to watch DVD on a regular or large screen TV.

    redwuz,

The question is do you know why they are 44.1KHz audio or higher. I'm just playing around, not trying to start anything btw.
