Hi8 tapes are the preferred media for Sony Digital8 camcorders. These tapes say 120 minutes, but when used in a Digital8 camcorder runs at double speed - thus 60 minutes. Yes, the firewire transfer to your PC works fine with Hi8 tapes.

Not all Sony Digital 8 camcorders can play pre-recorded analog 8mm tapes. Make sure you check the specs first before you buy one. For example, the DCR-TRV480 will play pre-recorded analog 8 mm and Hi-8 tapes, but the DCR-TRV280 will not.

It's not clear to me what you are asking. Do you want to take a pre-recorded 8 mm tape (recorded with an analog camera) and transfer that onto your computer using the firewire connection? Or are you asking if you can take a new 8 mm tape, record digital video with the Digital 8 camera, and then transfer that to your computer using firewire?
If it's the first question, then no you can't. (at least I can't with my Sony Digital 8 camera) The only thing you can do is use the pass-through feature of the camera, assuming your model supports that, and playing the tape on a different camcorder that is connected to the Sony camera with analog cables.
If it's the 2nd question, then yes you can. It is not recommended that you record digital video on a standard 8 mm tape, but I've done that before and was able to transfer it to the computer. There is a risk because the digital video may not have good integrity through the entire video. -
The high(er) end Sony Digital 8 Cameras will play back Hi8 tapes. They can then be sent over the firewire directly to the pc.
I have the TRV-350 and this works great. -
FWIW on tapes for Digital 8 camcorders, I use data grade tapes for all my recording (112 & 160 meter variety). They are cheap, durable and most importantly they produce the exact same results as the much more expensive D8 grade tapes that Sony is pushing. You can get 94 minutes on the 160 meter tapes. Don't let anyone tell you that there is a quality difference because there isn't.
