    Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing a capture card that is better than my bt878 chipset card

can you list capture cards that can capture direct to mpeg2 and re-edit with transitions etc and re-encode the video to mpeg2 dvd spec with hardware for faster encoding times?

also encode current avi files to mpeg2 using hardware mpeg2 encoding?

    any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

I know that ADS makes one.
I believe it's a separate device that connects
into firewire. Which just means you need to buy a
$19 firewire card to support the unit.
I've never tried it, but it looks alot like
their DV encoder which I've been quite happy with.

Note, my ADS DV encoder (Pyro AV) can also encode
to MPEG on the fly. So I have all choices, not just having
to go directly to (their ADS version) MPEG.

I'm sure there are many other options too, if you
look around. The above is what I'm most familiar with.

    Toss the BT878!
I struggled with that crap for way too long.

I wasted a lot of time and money trying to find a decent MPEG2 capture card and was never satisfied. Now I use a Pioneer DVD Recorder and have been emensely happy. When I want to edit or re-author I use DVDdecrypter to rip the disc to my HDD, then I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard to edit and/or Ulead DVD Workshop 2 to re-author. I'm 100% happy with the results! BTW, while the DVD recorder is recording, I can still use my computer to do other things. IMO, the Pioneer DVD Recorder was the best purchase I've made in ages.

    Good Luck!!!!

what i want to do is put effects into the videos
eg. zooming the video from a dot to full screen. having the video flying around untill it settles fullscreen

which has to be done on the computer and would require re-encoding thats why i want to know which hardware mpeg2 capture cards can re-encode the video using hardware so it doesnt take as long to encode the video as with software encoding.

    1 so for example
capture in high quality avi format
edit using adobe premiere or similar program
then hardware encode it to mpeg2
    then author to dvd

2 or capture into the highest hardware mpeg2 format
    edit using aboe premiere
    the re-encode in hardware mpeg2
    and author to dvd

your method is good if you dont want to add any effects and just want to cut scenes and make a fancier menu which wouldnt require re-encoding the footage and reauthor.

    MPeg2 editing is problematic.

    need
    http://www.mainconcept.com/mpeg_pro.shtml#standard
    (includes software re-encoder)

plus maybe hardware MPeg2 encoder if realtime needed.
