Should be just one. What are you using? A DVD Recorder? If so You adjust the quality setting just like on a VCR. The longer the record time the worse it gets.

It depends heavily on the avi. DV avi for example is about 12.5GB per hour of video. On the other other end of the spectrum is Divx in which an hour of video can be as small as 100-200mb.

For clarity, you are asking how many DVDs to store (no conversion) an hour long avi file?

Each DVD will hold about 4.3GB of Data. So for a 1 hour DV tape you will need (3) DVDs, provided you can split the file up fairly evenly between the (3) disks.

Well, I figured he wanted to convert that 1 hour AVI to MPG at a reasonable bitrate and author it, and so that would fit just about in one DVD/r otherwise the 3 dvd/r housing split files is correct.

The original ? was a bit vague since you just only provided us with the Time length of the video. As has been said a million times, the term AVI can mean a lot of things so it could be a DIVX or XVID, other compressed forms or uncompressed in the case a 60 min DIVX/AVI, it would fit on a CD.

Depends on the size of the file. 8)
