Hi all. Question. I have some AVI film files. Is it really worth converting these to MP2 (DVD) just so that I can get them onto a DVD disk? Or, should I just convert them to VCD and put them on a CD? The point I'm trying to make is, will converting an AVI to Mpeg2 really give a quality increase?

Depends on the quality and frame size of your source. But in short, if your AVI files are significantly better than VCD quality you'll get better results with DVD MPEG2 if you allow enough bit rate.

Ok thanks. One more question, when I finally convert from AVI to Mpeg 2, I find that the files are too big to go on a 4.7gb DVD? Any tips?

use a bitrate calculator and calculate what bitrates you need to use so that they do fit.
... and unless you're a guru with filters, converting AVI to MPEG-2 will never give a quality increase. Just because you convert something to DVD specs doesn't make it "DVD quality" automagically. If in doubt, Google it. -
I never said it would. In fact, that was the initial question!!!
Bitrate calculator? Where can I get one from. -
I know. It's just a common misconception, that's allOriginally Posted by cawright1

True, but converting to DVD specs mpeg-2 will give you better quality compared to converting it to VCD specs mpeg-1 (and possibly even compared to SVCD specs mpeg-2), of course depending on the quality of the AVI.Originally Posted by jimmalenko

True, but that's outside the scope of my original statementOriginally Posted by mats.hogberg

My statement, all other things withstanding, is true and correct. Basically what you're saying is that DVD-compliant MPEG-2 would more than likely be the lesser of the three evils - and I'm certainly in full agreement with that
If in doubt, Google it.
