IS it possible to convert multiple (say 22) avi files to DVD at once and so that it is one DVD file?

  2. Join the .avi files in virtualdub. Than encode to DVD. Its unnecessary though, you can author those without joining. Encode indivdually, then author together..
    Quality is my policy.

    It's called Authoring.

If you want a one-click wonder, you could use DivxToDVD and select all 22 files, and this will encode and author all 22 AVIs to seperate titlesets. No menus though, and little to no control over any settings.

Get the free version from here and knock yourself out - remember though, to click on the last file in your list, then hold shift down and click on the first file, and this will convert them in the right order.

or do it the manual way, and set up your encoder to encode all 22 files overnight or something. Then author.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Ok thanks jim
How do you set tmpenc to do 22 files automatically overnight?

I thought I'd have to do each one manually

If not in the wizard, set up each one, then go to File > Add current project to batch list > MPEG file. Select a destination and filename for the file and then you should be shown a "running sheet", showing your queued up file. Set up next encode, and do the same as above, and then you'll see two jobs in the Batch section. Repeat until you have all files set up.

If using the wizard, there's a tickbox on the last screen that says either "encode straight away" or "add more projects to batch" or words to that effect.

Tip: If you want all files to be processed with exactly the same settings, set up the first one, then save the settings as a custom template. then just load each new file in turn, and load the saved template, and all settings will be identical.
    If in doubt, Google it.

IS there any way to retain AC3 using tmpenc?

The only audio options i see in tmpenc is mpeg2 , lame mp3 or PCM.

Also, do i really have to save each file's audio to wav in virtualdub in preperation for the DVD

You need to purchase the AC3 plugin to encode to AC3. However, if your file already has AC3, simply encode Video Only, and then join your M2Vs back up with your AC3 when you author.
    If in doubt, Google it.

so i need to extract the audio using virtual dub, convert video only in tempenc then join them together when burning to a DVD?

Sorry if Im a bit slow, I only just got a DVD Burner today.

I tried DivXToDVD and it seems really slow. Whats the general opinion of that program in regards to video/audio quality. Will the output be the same as the source quality or more importantly will it leave AC3 in tact and not convert it to MPEG

If you've got AC3 in your source files, and you want to keep it intact, then don't extract to WAV. You can just demux it using virtualdubmod. Then do your video only in TMPGEnc and join the M2V files up with your demuxed AC3 files in your authoring software.

You think DivxToDVD is slow !!! hmmmmmmm ..... I've found it to be quicker ... much much quicker than TMPGEnc, and a lot of other similar apps. AFAIK it will convert any audio you throw at it to 2ch AC3. Quality-wise it is the best all-in-one one-click-wonder I've seen. 12. Streams --> Streams List --> Choose demux, name it, save it.

or you could check this tutorial.

However, I don't think you should put more than 12 episode in one DVD.

Since you have 22 episodes, you could make 2x 11.
It would take... 15 hours of converting for the whole 22 episodes, if you're using CCE. Then you will only have to author.
