  1. Just curious if there is a way to disable genuine advantage in win2000. I know how it is done in XP but there is no addon menu in IE on my 2000 machine.

  2. Do you have the latest IE6 SP1? I think it is the same on W2K and WXP

  3. I'll have to check it again. I updated everything via windows update when I installed it on the PC earlier this year. Maybe it didn't update to the latest IE though.

  4. I rechecked and yes I do have IE6SP1 installed on that PC and no there is no Add-ons menu. However I know the WGA installed (listed in the update history) but it passes every check so far. So I guess it's no big deal unless I hit issues later.

If you go into Internet Options, do you have a Manage Add-Ons button on the Programs tab?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  7. I don't have the add-on manager tab either.

I just installed WGA, then all the available updates

BTW, there isn't a "ManageAddonColumns" in my registry, so I guess something has changed or it's just not an option in win2k

  8. I'll tell you what, That Dang WGA can be a royal pain! I just did a HP that of course has a genuine Windows XP license. Had to do a clean install to a new drive as the old one was dead.

When we do this sort of thing I like to activate once I'm sure it is OK, before returning to customer. WGA won't go until activated. OK I activate but it won't activate say's call, finally talk to india... Blah, blah, blah... Activate, TaDa, yeah only spend an extra 40 minutes on that. Then WGA will work, I'm doing the WGA just to avoid phone calls later on like it won't do updates etc...

Before I could do all the updates to be sure none of them cause problems then add anitvirus, and activate.

    So Phooey on WGA.

    Cheers

I have a legit version of win 2000, but I hate stuff like this. Are there really any updates that are all that critical? I updated a month ago used SP 4 Rollup, and I use firefox, not IE. If it is necessary, how is it disabled in 2000?
    Thanks

As far as I can see there is nothing in W2K to disable that WGA. I was able to download and install the latest windows updates.

  14. It's actually LegitCheckControl.dll

BTW, it has an advertising module that is set to off. Looks like we have a new built-in adware program no too.

So it sounds like there is no way to disable in 2000? Can we still download the updates directly like before or did they stop that, too?
