  1. For some reason, I started getting these notifications that my Windows XP may be conterfeit. I'm not sure why it is popping up (SW is legit) but I download http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/RemoveWGA.shtml
and when I rebott, it is gone, but after awhile, it comes back. Any idea why this happens or how to actually get rid of this?

Call Microsoft. I've had this happen a couple of times when changing hardware. They don't grill you for receipts. Somehow they know it was working before.

If you cancel Windows Genuine Advantage, you can't get auto updates.

I'm not so sure about this; I don't have WGA installed, but still get auto-updates. The trick is to set windows update to just notfiy you of available updates and then choose which ones to install to avoid installing WGA in the background. But then again, I've never had WGA installed so don't know if that makes any difference.

If you don't have WGA you only get some security updates. You don't don't many other updates, and cannot download some applications. It is rare, but not unheard of, for WGA to get it wrong. If this is the case, call microsoft and get it sorted.

    I think it's WGA notifications.

It's listed as important on Windows Update. If you have Automatic
Updates set to auto-install, this will keep getting reinstalled.

The solution is to set AU to "notify me but don't automatically download"
Then you can deselect it when it occasionally pops up.

Some people have this sort of problem after getting 'help' with a problem. A friend or even an alleged professional wipes their drive and then installs the ever popular illegal version of Windows XP Pro that is all over the internet. They don't find out until they try to run update.
