Make sure that the DMA option is turned on for the harddisk
Also be sure that the harddisk, cable, and the controller are all for ATA 100.

defrag the harddisk regularly and make sure that no software is running on the background.

  4. I'm using ASUS A7A motherboard, 1,2 Mhz Athlon, 40G ATA 100 7200 rpm IBM disk with 2Mb cache, 512 Mb DDR, Windows XP Prof, AVI_IO and I can capture 768x576 without any dropped frames. The disk is a clean empty extra disk (slave), no Windows page files or any other files there.

The previous post has good tips, especially cable. Some people tend to hook up the extra disk to the second IDE controller, but this one doesn't support ATA 100! Use 64 (blue) fully wired IDE cable on primary IDE controller.

ok, thanx guys, AVI_IO is a God sent. This program will not drop a single frame while VDUB drops 30-50. anyway, I have a new problem, the sound. It is horrible and I would love to know if there was a way I can clean it up so I can start making VCDs of TV shows. Thanz for anymore help you can give me.
