Can a ordinary DVD player plays a video file which is in WMV format??

I have few video files in WMV format in a cd and would like to know if I can watch it in my TV connected to a DVD player.

I converted WMV format file into vcd format...which made it a huge 1.16 GB file. And I don't have a DVD ROM on my desktop. Also the quality was poor in VCD format.

    Please let me know.

    Thank you

No. You would need a player running one of the new Sigma chipsets with MPEG-4, AVC and HD WMV9 support.

VCD is 10MB/min and yeah the quality at the best of times is not that special.

Standard players don't support WMV or any of the next gen MPeg4 based formats but experimental hardware exists that pushes into the future of MPeg4 and HDTV formats before they are available in the standardized mainstream.

Go there at your own risk but expect to be able to use some future formats now, but also expect prototype performance and quick obsolescence.

    That said, go here

    Ok, here's the thing.

All the home videos that I've created so far, I used to take random (unedited) shots using my camcorder. Then I go to the video shop and that guy burns it to a VCD.

I come home, convert that into a .avi file and edit it with all the effects etc. using moviemaker. Then I save it into wmv format and watch it on my desktop.

Now I want to watch it on my TV. I thought that any DVD player would do the trick. Now that u say it won't work, is there any way I can change the procedure of editing the video file?

I don't have a firewire or TV tuner card etc. nor a high speed computer where I can edit and burn the cd by myself. Virtualdub is supposed to do the job, but there is no timeline for that. Also, if the file is anything more than 700 MB, then I can't burn it on a cd (again no dvd-r/w/ here).

So, it' wud be helpful if there is a decent way to avoid this tedious procedure. Can I tell that video guy to convert into .avi file instead of VCD? Is it possible? This is because moviemaker doesn't take the VCD or .dat format. And I'm comfortable doing editing using moviemaker.

    I appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks a lot!

  6. Try using Moviemaker as you have but when done with your project click "FILE" then "Save movie file" then "Save to my computer" then pick a name for your project file then pick "other settings" then select DV-AVI.
The Avi can be played on some DVD players (Toshiba 642 ect.) or you can convert this to MPEG2 with many programs for standard DVD playback. Good Luck.

A VCD will play on a DVD player but it is lowest common denominator MPeg1 at 352 x 240 pixels.

It is possible to extract the MPeg1 back off the VCD with a program like virtualdub and edit back to MPeg1 in VCD format. The guides to the left explain all this. WMV is not supported on standard DVD players. In the future Microsoft will support a HIMAT format but that only works for audio today.

What is your camcorder format? You might be able to get higher quality captures and then encode to MPeg2 (see SVCD and DVD to the left).

  8. Why not buy a DVD writer and firewire card? You can get a BenQ DW1640 for $50US and FW card for $20.As long as you have a >500MHz CPU.
Do it yourself...the writer and card will pay for itself and you'll get higher quality MPEG-2.
BTW...if the source(VCD) is poor quality then there's little you can do to make it better.
