  1. I had a hard drive crash on me, and reinstalled XP, have all the updates.

For some reason, no matter what program I use, all videos that I play look like they have a very low color depth... why is that?

    any ideas?

Try increasing the colour quality of your GPU to 32 bit under display properties in control panel.

You might need to install newer drivers for the video card as well...

  4. I made sure I did both of those things while I was setting it up.

the color only looks like that in video, everything else displays properly.

What are you using to view the videos. There might be a setting in the application that needs to be tweaked.

If you have a geforce video card then the newest driver will mess up your gamma setting causing the video to look washed out.Download the beta driver cause that will fix it.

  7. I've been using WMP10 and Media Player Classic

I DO have a geforce, and the newest drivers... I'll try an older driver.

I have a similar, if not the same, problem. All video seetings are adjusted to give best performance but playing any vid with any app gives a washed out appearance , except when I install and older gForce2 card, than all is okay, the newer vid card is GForceFX 5500 and pointers would be appreciated.
