Just about every major MB manufacture has SATA2 capability in their newest MB's. And AFAIK, they also would have IDE controllers, if nothing else for optical drives such as DVD burners and players.

SATA2 drives are also backward compatible with SATA MBs. The limiting factor for transfer speed is generally the MB controller and bus speed. You may not see any speed improvement over regular SATA.

DDR400 dual channel should work fine with most newer boards.

Same with AMD CPU's. You might look into the Venice core AMD 64 CPU's. A little less pricey than the P4's.

Pick a MB brand you like and see what they have. Read some reviews and take your time before you decide.

DDR2 is not compatible with DDR memory. It has 240 pins compared to 184 on DDR. I hadn't realized that many MBs had adopted it.

Gigabyte and Asus are both quality MBs.

There are so many MBs out there, it's hard to make a decision, I know.

It really pays to read a lot of reviews. A couple of sites I use:

    http://www.mbreview.com/

    http://www.motherboards.org/

Or do a Google search for 'motherboard reviews'.

Even if you buy the 'latest and greatest', there will be a 'better one' before you get it put together.
