About 4 years ago I was doing a search for Predator 2 on DVD, which wasn't yet released, when one of the "matches" was to EurekaMovies.com and a description for the movie but it was on VCD. "What the hell?" I said. I then searched for VCDs which eventually led me to this awesome site.

I was never much interested in burning VCDS but with Eureka as one of this sites sponsors I gut sucked in to buying quite a few commercial VCDs. I was never overly impressed with the quality but was very happy with the prices, especially from Eurkea, and the selection. At that time the Star Wars and Back to the Future trilogies were only avaiable on VCD as well as some other great movies. I bought mostly from Eureka with the occasional purchase from VCDGallery(I actaully bought a couple of commercial SVCDs from them). I bought a few from the less reputable GetVCDs.com as well.

My question is to anyone who use to buy original VCD or who are still buying them. Does anyone know what happened to EurekaMovies? I know VCDGallery is still offering movie for downloading but a lot of commercial vcd sites seem to have gone by the boards. There about half a dozen sites I use to visit that no longer are in service(Eureka, Videomas, GetVCDs etc.) and does anyone still sell commercial SVCDs?

I have since become much more of a videophille since my VCD buying days but I miss these sites, spcifially Eureka, as they did offer a much less costly option to dvds when there were movies I wanted at say $5 or $6 but wasn't interested in spending $20. I admit to a sense of pride at my VCD collection in their artwork and jewel cases and even the box sets. Given their price and inferiority I don't mind letting my son handle them, kind of a good practice run for taking care of his dvds.

Nowthat I've rambled for a little bit does anyon have any answers to some of my questions? As always responses would be greatly apprecaited? Thanks.

Wasn't even aware there was large amount of high profile titles available on VCD.

I own a couple of original VCDs (The Rock, DragonHeart, Dumbo, Blade, HellRaiser) from my pre-DVD days, but the quality is lacking, to say the least. Even the best is sub-VHS. I still fail to understand the popularity of the format in some countries. With the price of DVDs steadily dropping, and the order of magnitude in quality difference, VCDs have (and rightly so) gone the way of space invaders and pacman. Only the rose coloured glasses of nostalgia can make them any more than a fleeting novelty.

Nope. dont buy em anymore. And ive got rid of the VCD collection I used to own.

VCD was never popular or even redily available in the UK (you could not buy them from high street stores, only could buy them at the local market)

Since DVDs emerged, I didn't even look back at VCD.

I get Chinese martial arts movies on VCD that aren't worth getting in the DVD format. They're cheaper and I can get the VCD movies for about $5-$10 depending on the titles.

A few times a year, usually for something not available on DVD (often not available on my own continent, period).

I still got a few of these VCDs in my collection and just can't get them anymore as too hard to get now.

The VCD titles are Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Cadillac Man, FX - Murder By Illusion, Star Trek II Wrath of Khan and Extreme Games.

They're all as NTSC except for Star Trek as PAL.

Yeah, there are still sites like CoolVCD.com and ALLVCD.com but there were a whole lot more about three years ago. I really am interested as to what happened to EurekaMovies.com as they seemed to have been the best in the field. I guess they just went under.
