  1. Does anybody know what the average time? Ex: months, days or whatever a dvd writer usually lasts before errors occur?
It seems that in the dvd writer section a lot of people say that their dvd writer has stopped working properly.

  3. Check the manufacturer's website for the MTBF figure - the Mean Time Between Failures.

Don't forget you always hear about the unlucky ones - my father is using one of my old DVD writers - an A04, that's about 3 years old now and was subjected to very heavy use when I had it. I've never had a burner die on me. I've had a few get replaced when a better model came out, but never one pack up.

Almost the same here. Besides having 2 dead NEC 2500s, all of my DVD Burners have lasted over the years.

Even my pioneer A03 (2001) is still burning a few a day right now. I've never used my burners for anything other than burning DVDs. They've never seen any other type of media. The A03 gets a 20 minute cool down after a burn, my other burners all get 10-15 minute cool down periods.

I had 2 NEC 2500s just up and die. No longer detected by the motherboard, make that any motherboard. Swapped them out with 2 NEC 3500s.

In my closet, or PCs, there are 1 Pioneer A03, 4 Panasonic LF-D321, 2 Toshiba SD-R5112, 4 Pioneer A05, 2 NEC 2500, 2 NEC 3500, 1 Samsung/Toshiba TS-H552U Which needs to be replaced, it has god awfull burn quality on every speed higher than 4x. I'll retire the A03 and place the samsung there. The Toshiba's have been retired due poor burn quality on 8x Taiyo Yudens, my Panasonics are used daily for DVD-RAM duties.

The average Mean Time Before Failure is 80,000 - 100,000 hours. Roughly 4167 days, or 11.4 years. Use common sense, don't abuse your stuff, and it should last a while.
