  1. So far, with most DVD recorders, it has been recommended to use the same HDD recording resolution as one intends to use when burming the material to disc later (i.e. Sp > SP, LP > LP...) otherwise there is a loss of video quality introduced just from the transfer itself.
I remember reading recently - but didn't pay much attention at the time - that with the newer Pioneer DVD recorders (531, 533, 633), one is able to record for instance at XP to the HDD, and then transfer to disc at SP or LP without the usual loss of quality - other than the possible drop in quality due to the lower resolution.
Can anyone confirm that this in fact is the case? Thanks, tac7

The new Pioneer series has an XP+ mode that is a higher bit rate than will play on a DVD. Using it as your source will minimize any quality loss from re-encoding to a lower bit rate when burning to a DVD in real time. It will not produce any better video quality than using the same setting recording to the HDD that you will fast copy to a DVD. (XP+ cannot be burned to a DVD).

If you know what recording setting you'll be using for the DVD, then record the original to the HDD with that setting. If you don't know what setting you'll use for the DVD, then the best quality will come from recording to the HDD in XP+.
