I've finally started to get the hang of using my dvd recorder. But when I tried to connect my Canon ZR70 miniDV to the machine with a firewire cable, there was no signal at all. The cable is a mini firewire on both ends from Radio Shack. I even set the camcorder to av>dv out in playback. I got a picture when I connected the s-video cable.
Are there compatibility issues I should know about with the firewire cables? Or do I need to switch video imputs on the dvd recorder so that it will recieve the DV signal? The machine has front panel buttons so I can control the menu, however I don't have the accompanying remote.

  2. I'm not sure if you received a copy of the manual from another member or downloaded it awhile back, but I *think* you have it? If so, the instructions for recording from a DV camera are buried on page 54 (not the easiest manual to read thru, I know). Basically, your camera needs to be in "VTR" mode, and if it is an advanced camera with multiple settings it needs to be on "DVC-SD". Once you connect camera to recorder, recording from the DV input is operated by a combination of menu selections and the front panel transport controls. I'm pretty sure you can manage this even without the remote: use the front panel "Home" button to access the menu screens, then use the arrow keys to open the "Copy" menu. From there select the "DV Record" menu, then use the up/down arrow keys to initiate recording to either the HDD or a DVD. Before you attempt this, I suggest going into the "Initial Setup" menu and making sure the DV input has been turned on and set for normal audio: Pioneers sometimes need you to "activate" features you want to use, like variable speed recording and the DV input.

It worked, thanks a lot. The only annoying thing is that I couldn't adjust the video settings in the DV mode and I would have preferred not to see all those on screen graphics about recording info when I was making the dub.
