I am sort of new to this but have a tad of experience. I am runnin a G5 Dual 1.8 GHZ processor and have about 30gb free space and over 1gb of RAM. I currently had some DVD Rips of some movies and used ffmpegx to convert them over and burn them to DVD using toast. I used the presets that ffmpegx offers and I get a folder with a video_ts and audio_ts, but when I burned the folder using toast under the UDF I put it in a DVD player and the video played with no sound.
So I checked the original DVD Rip Divx AVI and it had sound and picture and was perfect.
So i went to the folder I burned and I checked the audio_ts folder and it was empty. I noticed that ffmpegx after converting gives me addl files along with the folder with the audio and video_ts. It gives me .mpv and .ac3 files. I dont know if I need those or its just part of the converting process. I dont know if there is an easier way using ffmpegx or a better way on MAC.
If anyone can help, please let me know!

The AUDIO_TS folder is always empty. Try to load the VIDEO_TS folder in VLC and check if there is sound. If yes try to change the audio track from 0 to 1 with your remote control.

K, I opened up the TS Folder in VLC and the video played but no sound still...also the video seemed to be stretched while the Divx original seems to be perfectly proportionate. Is there something wrong that I am doing in the encoding stage, or maybe something wrong with the presets or picking the wrong preset in ffmpegx?

If you open that VIDEO_TS folder in ffmpegX, does the summary tab show the audio format?

Oh wow! Yea, I opened the file in VLC and then opened up the audio track and saw that there was another track...there was a 0 digital and then 1 stereo. I selected 1 stereo and then......VLC crashed. I restarted, did it again and VLC crashed, restarted one more time and VLC crashed again. So that is where I am now...any suggestions?

i put the original XviD.AVI in QT and no picture or sound produce. I brought it into VLC just to triple check myself and it does produce sound and picture.

Then try to install the divx codec for mac from www.divx.com and try again from step 1/.

k i installed the divx codec and i was able to see audio and video on Quicktime. So I will no go and try to encode it in ffmpegx as mpeg2enc and change the audio to MP2, and see if that works.
When I select the preset for the mpeg2enc the video size is different from the AVI, can I set it manually so that it will stay the same proportions or will that screw everything up?

well I sent the AVI file once through and had only a .M2V,.MP2, and a .WAV file. I deleted it all, quit ffmpegx and did it again. The result was the same and the progress window indicated that it was finished. At this point I think it has to be the AVI file. So I decided to try another AVI file that I had to see if maybe it would work. I hope this file works, going nuts!

I have been trying the same thing with an XVID I have. I have just used the the presets both for ffmpeg and mpeg2enc in that order. The only thing I changed was decoding with mplayer instead of quicktime since the .avi played smoother in mplayer. After everything was done I played a .vob file in VLC and everything seemed fine so I went ahead and burned my 2 folders. In my standalone player (Pioneer DV-C503) the video looks great but the audio cuts in and out. In my PS2 (slimline) it plays, but the video is jerky, almost as though frames are missing.
I tried your suggestion of trying to change the audio channel on the first burn it it won't switch from the 5.1 channel. I'm not sure where to proceed from here.
