I would like to try this too.

Make tests of differant media, and my differant burners, but DVD decrypter wont reconigize any of the files. I already tried both my burners with a lot of differant media, but I used Nero.
    These files are named: VIDEO_TS IFO 12KB, VIDEO_TS BUP 12KB, VIDEO_TS MPEG 44KB, VTS_01_0 BUP 56KB, VTS_01_0 IFO 56KB, VTS_01_0 MPEG 344KB, VTS-01_1 MPEG 921,982 KB, VTS_01_2 MPEG 922,010 KB, VTS_01_3 MPEG 922,086 KB, VTS_01_4 MPEG 922,036 KB, VTS_01_5 MPEG 524,352 KB.
    AVIcodec says this
Video codec : Supported, audio codec : LMPC Unsupported, resolution : 720x480, aspect ratio : 16:9 for all parts.
    VIDEO_TS
    File : 44 KB (0.0 B), duration: 0:00:00, type: MPG, 0 audio stream(s), quality: 88 %
    Video : 43 KB, 8000 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported
    VTS_01_0
    File : 344 KB (0.0 B), duration: 0:00:00, type: MPG, 0 audio stream(s), quality: 88 %
    Video : 343 KB, 8000 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported
    VTS_01_1
    File : 900 MB (0.0 B), duration: 0:00:00, type: MPG, 0 audio stream(s), quality: 88 %
    Video : 900 MB, 6718 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported
I tried to change the extension from IFO to ISO, but no luck.
    Hope thats enough info.
    Thanks Mike

You need to convert your Video_TS & Audio_TS folders to an iso file. I used TMPGEnc DVDAuthor to do this and then I used DVDDecryptor to burn the iso file. However, if you want to this on the cheap (i.e., free), I believe I read about a freeware tool ImgTools that will create an iso files from your Video_TS folder. Check it out.

  4. Mike, if you happen to use DVD Shrink as many of us do, the simple answer is to have Shrink output as an ISO file instead of DVD Video files. The option will only come up when you're about to output the file(s).

Ok, so when I use TMPGEnc author, ImgTools, or DVD shrink, each has to rencode, thus a loss of quality?
If so that would really stink, I have about 30 tests all with this video. Each burner I have, and every kind of media I have.
If I rencode the quality will suffer, but would I be able to still use this file for acurate comparisions made before changing from IFO to ISO? You know what I mean, compair with the already burned disks?
    Thanks Mike

One problem (VTS_01_3 MPEG, etc) should be named VOB not MPG like the files you list in your post.

OK that made me think about the hide extensions for know files option, so I unchecked that. Now the files names read like this VTS_01_1.VOB like that for all the ones I named MPEG, but the IFO & BUP files stayed the same. I'm going to try to rename them again.
    Thanks Mike

If you are going from a DVD9 to a DVD5 and attempting to keep the entire contents of the DVD9....YES.
Think of it as 9 pounds of crap in a 5 pound hole....

No. Neither of these apps encode. DVDShrink transcodes which in terms of quality loss is about equal to reencoding, but as the sole purpose of DVDShrink is to make too big DVD data smaller, this is inevitable. TDA doesn't (even can't) neiter encode nor transcode, but "packages" suitable DVD source material according to the DVD specs (and can even burn it to disc). ImgTools takes the "package" from TDA or other authoring app, and wraps it up as an image of a DVD, an ISO image, that most burning apps (here DVDDecrypter comes highly recommended) can finally write to a writable DVD media.

Now my question is, If I use both TDA and ImgTools to change the file, will the resulting file be good enough to use in the comparison tests of media burned with the old files? I don't need DVD shrink Its a 1 hour TV show.
    Thanks Mike

TDA and imgtools do not alter the source quality at all. They only wrap it up in various ways.
After making an image with imgtools, you'll have an ISO that every self respecting burner app can write to disc.

I still have one more question. If you would be so kind as to straighten me out.

I can rip a DVD with DVD Dcrypter in either file mode or ISO mode. The question is when I rip Mode>ISO>Read, the files on my HD are, "name.ISO" and "name.MDS". To burn with DVD Dcrypter I select Mode>ISO>write, then when I select the source, and there are the 2 choices "name.ISO" and "name.MDS". If I select "name.ISO" a screen appers and says "you should have picked the MDS file, I'll do it this time, but don't do it again." So I then burn the MDS file to the DVD-r. The disk appers to be good, is it? The MDS file is so small, but the disk is full, do I have all of the movie? Am I going to have problems when we get more DVD players (I tried some samples in the one we have now), or if I go to somebody else's house, or if I ever get a great TV?
I just think I'm missing something.
    Thanks Mike

The MDS is just info, pointing DVDDecrypter to the ISO and telling it how to write the ISO. (Like a cue/bin pair.) The author of DVDDecrypter is just pulling your leg - you're fine either way!

    Really?
I've been sweating this. I was going to start a new thread, because nobody replied.

  17. I don't believe the latest version of the program gives you that message when selecting the ISO file anymore. You might want to update while the program is still around.

  18. The MDS file is for FAT32(4GB file limit),if you're using NTFS go to Settings->ISO Read and disable "Create MDS file".
