  1. I left my pcs for about 4 hrs and when I came back to them the internet connection on them both had failed and I can't get it back. IE, Firefox, eMule and Bittorrent all stopped working.

One PC is ethernet the other wireless, and both Firefox and IE have had their home pages changed from google to mozilla.org.

Neither pc will access the internet unless I change accounts - luckily I have two setup on the laptop.

What the bloody hell has happened here ?

    Uhm... 2 questions.

    1) have you talked to your ISP to make sure its not an issue on their end

    and

    2) how are we talking now?

  3. Switching users on my wireless laptop allows me use the internet and the router reports my ADSL as connected at the right speed, even my desktop (connected via ethernet) shows the internet connection Icon.

I'm in work at the moment

Very odd. not sure what to say here.

Uhm... yeah both user accounts corrupting at the same time seems unlikely.

Hrm... maybe there is some new hack out there? Your machines all upto date?

You try power-cycling your modem? Occasionally my DSL modem chokes up on high-bandwidth ports, especially when more than one computer is connecting through it. Make sure to leave it off for a good 30 seconds or so and the power it back up again.

There is no problem with either the modem or the router as it works fine by switching users on the laptop.

I've just noticed something quite horrible. Whilst searching through the router options i noticed a screen that showed users connected to the router, I had my Acer (my laptop) Server (my desktop) and something called Snoopy which was Time Expired - anyone know what the hell that is ?

I highly suggest you reconfigure you router to only accept connections by known mac addresses.

And turn off SSID broadcasting. That's the easiest way to prevent random folk from trying your network. You just have to remember what your router's SSID is when trying to add a new connection but that should be simple enough with one wireless network. Also make sure to at least use WEP encryption. WPA is a better option if you've got it.
