  1. Hello,

I have been told that dvd discs can only hold 4.7gb. I have some media that I need to put on it and it is 4.9gb. I have seen some places saying some discs can hold more. is this true? If so what are they called?

    Thanks for reading this.

  2. You can now get Dual Layer DVD recordables which will hold 8.5GB of data, although these are still relatively expensive compared to single layer DVD's.

What is it you want to put onto DVD ?

If it's a movie you can remove parts of it like the extras, subtitles, languages etc, or you can compress it to make it fit onto single layer 4.7GB DVD.

If it's data you could split it over two discs.

Let us know what your media is so we can give you more info.

From the left 'What is DVD', they can hold 4.37GB. Any more and you would have to split to a second disc. I'm not aware of any DVD-5 discs that can hold more. However there are dual layer DVDs (8.75GB) and 2 sided DVDs (7.95GB) that can hold more and pressed DVD (Dual layers) can hold more.

It's a series. It would be a pain to split it for 0.2gb I will look in to those other discs. I presume thats these discs are available within the uk? I could always get them imported. :P

  5. Yes, the Dual Layer discs are available here in the UK.

But for what I think you want to do, I would suggest just compressing the media slightly using something like DVDshrink rather than using the expensive Dual Layer discs, unless you want to fill the Dual Layer discs, but even then you will probably have more data than the discs can take so you would still have to compress to fit.

I would take a look at compressing your media to fit single layer 4.7GB DVD's especially if this is your first time doing this.
Single layer discs are a hell of a lot cheaper than dual layer discs, so making a few coasters wouldn't be such a problem.

The DVD sizes can be a bit confusing. There are basicly 4 different DVD Sizes,

DVD-5, holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes* . DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Single Sided Single Layered. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media.

DVD-10, holds around 9 400 000 000 bytes and that is 8.75 computer GB. DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Double Sided Single Layered.

DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD-R9, DVD-R DL, DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media.

DVD-18, holds around 17 080 000 000 bytes and that is 15.9 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Double Sided Dual Layered.

    * In the computer world is 1 KB data = 1024 bytes so 4 700 000 000 bytes / 1024 = 4 589 843KB / 1024 = 4482MB / 1024 = 4.37GB. See section 3.3 in the DVDDemystified FAQ here.

DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL and DVD-R/DVD-RW exact sizes
    DVD-R/DVD-RW = 4 706 074 624 bytes ( 4488 MB )
    DVD+R/DVD+RW = 4 700 372 992 bytes ( 4482 MB )
    DVD+R DL = 8 547 993 600 bytes ( 8152 MB )
I'd just run it through DVDShrink to pull it down to fit on a DVD-5 if I were you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    DITTO.

Use DVD Shrink to compress to 4.37GB so you can fit onto a single layer dvd.

A dual layer disc will cost you ten times the price of a single layer disc.

    For media, use www.svp.co.uk

  8. Toka,
The other thing nobody mentioned yet is that to record on DL (dual/double layer discs) you have to have a DL DVD-writer. You cannot simply use a DL disc in a standard DVD writer. If you don't know for sure whether or not you have a DL DVD writer, then you probably don't.
