Is there any way to tell just from the outside packaging what these discs are, and if they are ok to buy? They're 19.99 for 100. Don't hurt me

Not when $23.99 + shipping gets you Taiyo Yuden/JVC discs from Rima.com.
-
+R's are also 19.99, which is a much bigger savings than Rima's 30.99 + shipping. The crux of the question, is the difference in price worth the potential/perceived reduction in quality?
-
Any way you could possibly stop not answering this question? It's not really helpful.

Ditto that.
Other than TY which are made in Japan, most DVDs are made by different companies and branded by the manufacturer on the label. Look for the Made In country. If it isn't Japan, Taiwan or maybe Singapore, the disc quality will be inconsistent and questionable at best. You wont see the MID on the packaging. Maybe on the inner circle of a disc, if not with Discspeed or MediaInfo etc. I use only TY or Verb to be reasonably sure of quality. Cheap media is cheap for a reason.I love children, girl children... about 16-40

Memorex disc aren't bad as long as I don't try to record on them in my Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder.

C'mon now...Sony isn't as bad as Memorex.
Here is the info from digitalFAQ.com:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
1. Verbatim DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD+R DL , made in India, UAE, Singapore or Taiwan. (Do not buy the "Life Series" or "Value Series" discs.) Good Version is getting harder to find.
2. JVC Taiyo Yuden DVD-R or DVD+R, from an authorized dealer only. Our list to the left only included authorized dealers.
3. Sony DVD-R or DVD+R, made in Taiwan only. These are getting harder to find.So if you can identify from the package that they were made in Taiwan, I'd say that it would be worth the price difference.Last edited by dare2be; 27th Mar 2011 at 13:45.

hech's "enough said" reply is at worst rude, and at best incomplete/overgeneralized...since some Verbatim's are not good quality (Life and Value series).
-
I wish I could get paid for every time someone posted "I have never had a problem burning __________ brand discs in the past, but now all my burns fail". We also get people posting how Memorex has never failed them should you feel extra lucky and want to try those.
Sony is hit or miss. Some of their US sold discs are crap. Some were made by very high quality manufacturers. I don't buy Sony discs because it's too much trouble to try to figure out which one you have. It's just easier to buy TY or the good Verbatim discs and not have to worry about it. -
I've been using these Sony's bought at Staples for years, never had a problem with any of them..... use them to burn movies and on different brands of DVD recorders and computers..... they always seem to work for me.
-
Sony used to be a good third choice, and readily available at brick and mortar stores. In the distant past, they've used TY for many of their disks, produced their own disks in Taiwan using their own mid codes and had some good quality disks made by Daxon in Malaysia. Daxon is no longer producing optical media and these days Sony disks are no different from any of the other brands you can buy locally. Its a crap shoot as to what you get, who makes it and what particular grade of media you're buying.
I no longer recommend them, even as a third runner up to AZO Verbatim or TY. -
I think the simple fact that through experience users have found that TY and Verbatim cause the least problems is why the direct answer to your question is, why bother?
Now................I have a firm belief that the conditions that media, be it tape/disc or drives are kept in can have a big impact on its eventual success, and even the best media if kept in sunlight or badly treated will not play well in 5 years.PAL/NTSC problem solver.

Anything from 2009 or older is Sony/Daxon Taiwan or Malaysia.
Anything new from 2010-2011 is RitekF. (Fuji based dye Ritek media.)
I know I've seen threads about it here: http://www.digitalFAQ.com/forum/media/
Possibly even posted about it myself, but it was in past months.
MCC is better media.
In theory so is TY, but there is room for debate on reflectivity issues.
RitekF is good media.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Scratching your head ... I know what he is saying ... he wants a direct answer and if you say ... NO ... he would like a reason why you are saying ... NO.
He is hoping someone might have an inside scoop on SONY disks ... whether he should just jump in the car and go for a 10 minute casual drive down the street and buy them ... that is how far Staples is for me.
A nice simple answer ... is what he is looking for ... as for myself ... I still have some TDK disks ... Made in Taiwan ... that I bought back in ... 2007 ... I believe.
Sometimes ... you can see where they are made on the package.
I would look up ... reviews from other customers about that particular brand.
Or for 20 bucks ... just figure ... well I got 100 of them ... just how many will screw up ... when I try to burn one ??
The coaster ratio ... may not be that bad.
Most of my work is done in my garage ... and my stack of blank disks just sit out in the open ... no lid on it ... but when I do get one from the stack ... I get one from the middle and leave the dusty one ... on top.
I also use a lot of DVD rewritables ... I've got quite a few ... Ridata DVD-RW ... lying around [must have bought a 25 pack at one time] ... I use them to watch Divx processed movies on my Phillips DVD Player in the bedroom.
My wife likes to watch movies done this way ... that way current TV Show Series just plays ... non stop ... one after another ... she just finished watching ... The Tudors ... and now she is watching ... Boardwalk Empire episodes.
As for the last batch of Disks I actually bought ... was at Walgreens ... they had a sale on Maxell ... 13 bucks for a 50 pack ... I bought 2 Packs ... and yes ... some didn't burn correctly ... if the burn fails ... my garage side door opens up and I toss the disk out the door ... simple at that ...Last edited by lacywest; 28th Mar 2011 at 03:17. Any foreign made media must say the country of origin on it. If not it should be "Made in the USA" Anything other than those two choices and US Customs will be interested.
Many, many, many years ago I was picking up some raggedy ann & andy dolls at the piers and Customs put a hold on them as suspected counterfeits. The 2 Guys from Harrsion warehouse had to wait a while longer. They were a Local NJ chain years ago around the same time as Great Eastern Mills was in existence. If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself. -
FYI, I bought a +R spindle...made in Taiwan, media code RITEK-F16-01.
