I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I heard somewhere that you can convert/hack a dvd player so that it can play avi files on regular cdr. Is that true and if yes, how?

If your dvd player doesn't support avi or divx/xvid you can not just hack it. It requires a new chipset that can decode the video.
