I have tried to research this one without bothering anyone but can't seem to find the solution to my problem. I started burning coasters last week using the same programs I have for the last six months now. I am using Dvd Decrypter/Dvd Shrink for backing up my dvds. It has always worked great. Until this past week. I have a Sony dvd burner and a Sony dvd Rom. I can rip the files using decrypter, then shrink to get the iso file, but when i try to burn using Decrypter, I get an ISO error. I have tried using two different burning software programs also and keep getting errors and burning the coasters. I have switched media types. I have gone in and uninstalled both the burner and the dvd rom to see if it was because the sony dvd rom was coming up as PIO. It reinstalled the same way, with the rom as PIO and the burner as UDMA. I have not changed any settings within decrypter or shrink. The only thing I did differently than any other time ever is last week I burned a cd using Win Media Player. Any suggestions on what is going on? I would have gone to Lightning UK website with this problem, but well...u know. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem with my old Sony DRU-510A a few months ago.

I took it out of my PC and put it into another system to rule out a systemic/application issue only to dsiscover it failed there as well.

That drive died on me so I replaced it with an NEC 3520A, not a coaster since.

Try swapping the dvd drives out to another machine one at a time as I did to see where the fault may lie.

Best wishes and post back with your results, ok?

    Cheers!

What is the error? Is it failing part way though the burn or just refusing to burn at all? Or is it saying it can't read the ISO file on the HD?

Anyway, if it fails during the burn, maybe try cleaning the laser with 'canned air', or better, a cleaning disk if that doesn't help.

I have now changed out the IDE cable. I checked my settings within windows and it keeps coming up as a cd burner like that is the default and I have to choose the DVD RW settings (to select software to use).

I burned a cd with it and it comes out fine. So, I don't think that the burner itself is bad. I am completely stumped on this.....I am ready to uninstall windows media player if that is what has caused the problem. That is the only different software I have used since this problem started. Would appreciate knowing your opinions and thank you to Red and Tao so far.

That still could indicate that the DVD burning laser is shot, but the CDR laser works.

As I said, can you pull that drive out and put it into another machine? Also grab another DVD burner from a friend and try it in your machine and see if it does the same thing, that way you can rule out a potential application/OS contention issue.

Let us know what you find, ok?

    Good luck!

Many kudos to you Redwudz! Something as simple as a cleaning disc did the trick, I am burning great looking DVD's again. Lots of dust here in Texas, lol. Tried that before I moved the DVD to another computer, Tao. Thank goodness, I would have been sorely disappointed in Sony as the thing is less than six months old and I know I haven't even burned 50 dvds yet.

BTW, thanks to the creators, moderators and sponsors of this site. Not to mention all of the good people who post their guides, comments and experiences. Your contributions are greatly appreciated! Keep up the good work!

Thanks again, Tao and Red for the help. You made my weekend turn out much better!

Great! My rule is always try the easiest solution first, then go to the more complex. I have plenty of dust problems where I am, and I vacuum and blow the gunge out my equipment regularly.

BTW, if you have dust on your laser lens, you might want to take a look at the interior of your computer also.
