  1. Hi,

I have an avi file which needs a codec which doesn't seems to be divx 5 (just downloaded the newest) or mpeg 4. Is there any way to find out which codec was used to create the file?

And, is there a package which contains all the codecs there exist?
I just installed "ACEMCP601PRO.exe" which I found, but apparently this doesn't contains the necessary codec .

    Thanks in advance

    1. Codec packs are a bad idea - install only the codecs you need.

    2. GSpot or AVICodec (available from the tools section under Codec/Video Identifiers (click here)) should help.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. Thanks , but none of the two can detect the coder (while they could detect the coedecs for other avi's I still had) - so I guess the file is broken...
    too bad...

Thanks again. At least I'm sure now.

Try opening the file in virtualdub. It may give you a "Cannot locate decompressor for XXXX" message, where XXXX is the FOURCC code of the codec used.
    If in doubt, Google it.

GSpot, etc. will still tell you the FourCC even if they don't know what codec it is for.
