This article basically says that the bigger and more powerful digital TV's consume more electricity.

I'm not sure I fully believe this article. I thought everything was becoming more energy efficient. I know computers are becoming more powerful, but I also thought they use less energy. I could be wrong though.

Basic electrical appliances are becoming more efficient. I really don't know about computers specifically but considering the lights dim when I throw the main power switch for the power supply (this didn't happen with my older machine) and my video card requires direct power I would think not. There's also about 4 more fans on this machine twice as big etc etc.

As for the TV's if you want to make a fair comparison you need to compare TV's of the same size. The only thing that article mentions is that larger and digital TV's consume more but they don't tell you what they are comparing it to.

Well, no shit. Did it really take an article to reveal obvious common sense?
Must've been a slow news month at The Christian Science Monitor (article source).

  6. I don't believe a word of it! The next thing they will want you to believe is that a 8 cylinder engine burns more gas than a 4 cylinder engine.

A great way to get a HUGE picture and lower your electric bills:

Get a front end projector, I have an InFocus 4805 (the price of which is a fraction of a "big screen TV"), I get a beautiful 84" picture ( I have a small living room, 84" is all I can go 8) ) and my electric bill is 20$ a month (plus I live on Long Island, domain of electric rate hell). I know projectors aren't for everyone, but just a suggestion.

I bought a Sony video projector 2 years ago for about $1500 including 5' x 8' screen and have never regretted it for a minute. I still have my 27" TV for network viewing. The only downside is the room needs to be dark, but I don't watch TV during the day anyway. Still on the original bulb also.

Plasma would be nice, but if I upgrade my system, it will be another projector. Nothing like the big screen in a small room.
