It's very unclear what you want to do - Just back them up? In that case, just copy them to another place on your HDD, or burn them as data to a recordable CD or DVD.
But perhaps you want to convert them into something watchable using a DVD player? In that case, head over to the convert section, search under AVI to DVD. Or am I completely at the wrong track?

  4. You will need to get a DVD authoring program that accepts subtitles, of which DVD Lab Pro is an example.

Convert your AVI and audio to DVD compliant streams, import the audio video and subtitle streams into DVD lab, build project, compile, burn.

Guides for all these procedures can be found on this site.

dvd lab pro won't open AVI files - you need to convert to DVD-compliant MPEG-2 first. TMPGEnc, CCE, MainConcept are just a couple of examples of encoders that will take your AVI and convert to MPEG. Go to the guides section, and click on "AVI to DVD" in the conversion dropdown
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yep, that is about normal. The reason is that for Xvid and divx you need to generally use 3-4x the bitrate of the AVI on the MPEG to retain a similar quality, resulting in the filesize of the MPEG also being rough 3-4x the AVI. You could make the MPEG the same size if you wished, but if you kept a DVD-compliant resolution I can almost guarantee it will look crap
    If in doubt, Google it.
