Does anyone know if the phillip 642 divx player supports HD-Burn discs. Is there a firmware hack that is needed?

...I wouldn't hold my breath.... Possibly if you swapped the drive in your player for a Sanyo HD compatible reader...

No one supports this format. In fact, I'm not sure if you can still buy burners that can do it. Sony proposed a very similar sounding format at about the same time and it never took off. If you need more capacity than 80 minute CD-Rs, your realistic choices are:
90 minute CD-Rs (most burners can burn them and most devices can read them)
99 minute CD-Rs (most burners CANNOT burn them and many devices may not read them)
DVD
Please note that 90 and 99 minute CD-Rs violate CD standards and some devices may refuse to read such discs, but most devices can read the 90 minute discs without problems.
Just FYI, Plextor supported a way to burn extra data to CDs by writing to only parts of the pits on the disc, but those who tested this format said that using non-Plextor drives to read such discs were hit and miss, with a lot of misses. -

Am I missing some application for these? -

besides, that article is from September 2002. As you can tell by everyones lack of knowledge , it was a very popular format.Google is your Friend -
Only Sanyo(Optorite, etc) drives support HD-BURN,I have one and don't use the feature anymore because no other player/drive supports it.When DVD media was >$2.00US apiece HD-BURN was a great idea,1.4GB on one CD,but now that DVD media is almost the same price as a CD.....why bother.
