    Hello all.
It's been a while for me here but everyone was a big help in the past and once again I have a problem.
I have some large VOB files (about a GB each) on my HD that I need to burn to a CD to take to a friend's PC because he has a DVD burner. Using Winzip at maximum compression I couldn't get them small enough to put on a CD. Then I tried splitting the files with Winzip but when I took them to his PC, Winzip wouldn't extract the files, something about corrupt headers?
Are there any cheap utilities out there that can get these files onto a CD for me?
    Thanks.

    Hi,

You could try using the trial version of Winrar, it is able to split compressed files.

I personally would just borrow your friend's DVD Burner and install it in your computer to proceed and burn directly to DVD+R.

Instead of buying a cheap compression utility, spend $50 on a DVD burner. You'll be glad you did.

If you have the time, I guess you could try sending it to him via icq, aim etc. Good luck not getting a timeout or something though!

Touch luck on trying the splitting and it not working.

Guys, thanks alot for your suggestions.
I can't email the files to my friend however because he has no connection. As far as getting a burner, it won't be doable in my budget at least until September so I was hoping someone knew of something else, preferably very cheap.

I'll do some more research and hopefully come up with something.

You could use a splitter program (like HjSplit, for example) to split the files to fit on a couple cd's. Then use the same program on your friend's computer to unsplit (or join) the files.

HjSplit is free, and like all splitters/joiners uses a virtually foolproof mechanism.

By the way, if you don't like HjSplit, just put "freeware file splitter" into Google, and pick another splitter/joiner program. Google gives 292,000 search results on the term.

  8. OH dont try to email vobs to your mate even when he does get inet... most email progs and servers have a max size for attachments ... a lot less than 100mb probably max of 15mb or even 5mb

  9. Couldn't you use DVD Shrink and load only each clip into a dvd, add the compression, and then burn the new vobs to cds, one per each cd? That way you would could keep basically the same quality but make them fit.

If you are using windows xp and have directx9c installed , go grab Ratdvd .

Just tested it with default settings on a 280mb mini dvd I had .

    Down too 80mbs , not bad .

Your friend will also require to have the above specs , and installed ratdvd to undo the job you did when compressing them .

My system now being athlon 2800xp took 30 minutes to compress it and decompress it again with no quality problems ... give it a go...

PS : dont try using it on a dvd disc in the dvd drive , it will be black video ... some people have already tried that ...
