Hi everyone. This is a problem that has been happening recently when trying to burn DVD's. I author them with TMPGEnc DVD Author, and then go into Nero 6 to burn them. I get different errors along the way. Here are two:

I started seeing this problem a few weeks ago. I searched around for this, and many people say to enable DMA on my drives. It is enabled, even though the Nero log says it isn't:
I had to reinstall Windows for other reasons, and when doing that I put it on a brand new drive and new cables for that drive. Still the same error as before.=== Scsi-Device-Map ===

It seems unlikely that all your devices have DMA off. You might try Nero Info Tool to see what it says.
Still, if you have eliminated media, I would first suspect a hardware problem with the burner, maybe dirt on the DVD writer lens or a different problem with the writer, or remotely, MB problems. Especially if you have reinstalled the OS.
You might upgrade the MB BIOS if a newer one is available and make sure you have the latest MB drivers also.
That's about all I can come up with, sorry. -
Thanks for the response. I wasn't sure what to look for in Nero Info Tool, but I will post what I think to be the relevent section below.
It could be a hardware problem with the burner, but I haven't used it a whole lot. However, the times I have in the past have worked fine. It was a shock since it stopped working a few days after burning something else, with no hardware/software configuration changes or anything.
Could be dirt/dust, not sure. The only mobo BIOS update was related to the CPU. The idea that its a mobo problem or mobo driver problem just seems a bit off, since it always has worked. If it never worked, I could understand.

This is the section I was refering to:
Still, if the media is not the problem, the burner would be my next choice. -
I should also add that now I cannot burn audio CD's either. Here is the error from that:

That really sounds like a burner problem. I can't access my X64 computer at the moment, so I'm not sure what the Nero Info Tool would show for comparison. Doesn't really sound like a DMA problem.
I would try some 'canned air' and blow it into the burner with the tray open (Towards the bottom of the burner) and see if it clears anything from the laser lens. If you get any improvement, then try maybe a cleaning disc.
If no luck, maybe a burner replacement? If you can switch it out to a different burner, even a CD burner temporarily, that would answer the question. -
Oh sorry. Really tired here, so I forgot to mention...
I burned the audio CD today with a completely different burner. I have my Sony DRU500A for DVDs, and a TDK VeloCD for CD's. I used the TDK today for the audio, and it gave the above errors.
That's why I'm somewhat lost, since both burners do it, on a clean install of Windows. (Never used to do this before)

I updated to the latest chipset drivers from nVidia yesterday. I tried to burn something today, and my whole computer froze after burning.
Any ideas on this?
Thanks

Well, that's different. Sorry, I didn't catch that the CD burner was having similar problems. Could be a bad memory module, power supply failing or worst case, something wrong with the motherboard. I am assuming that you haven't changed anything else in the computer.
The power supply can be checked for voltages in the BIOS or with a program like Motherboard Monitor. And you can unplug all drives except to boot drive to see if the PS is overloaded.
Memory modules can be tested with Memtest86, but it's often easier to just switch out the modules. Bad or failing memory can cause all sorts of weird problems, but they usually show up with memory intensive applications such as encoding.
Burning is usually not memory intensive. If you have reinstalled the OS and have the latest drivers. I doubt it's a hard drive problem as it would show up elsewhere.
You should check if the burners are set to DMA, though that should just slow things down, not cause failure.
There's still possibilities with bad cables, though not with more than one burner.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that might cause this sort of problem. If you rule out all the most likely candidates, it could point to the motherboard, at least the drive controller chip.
Sorry, I'm out of guesses. Unfortunately there are few if any diagnostic programs that can really test out a system.
With the kind of errors you are getting it's a major problem. It's hard to pinpoint it to anything specific. Maybe someone else can come up with some ideas.
If you are desperate, pull the battery from the motherboard or reset the BIOS if you know the jumper to use. You won't lose anything but the BIOS settings. You can note them before you do this. That should start you with a fresh slate, just in case the BIOS settings have gotten corrupted. You can also reinstall the BIOS if it's messed up.
That just about covers all the possibilities unless the MB itself has a problem. -
Nero 6 is a real piece of crap. Nero 5.5.X is the version to use, Nero 6 produces nothing but problems, problems, problems, and more problems.
Did you by any chance upgrade to SP2 in Win XP? If so that may be the cause of your problems. Half the time when something that was suddenly working perfectly on an SP system stops working, it's due to the f#%&#ing SP2. SP2 is death. Avoid it.
Assuming you've looked at the obvious issues like a heavily fragmented hard drive, and assuming you're not trying to burn a DVD from the same hard drive you're using for the XP OS (you _must_ use a separate HD to brun from, and it _must_ be defragmented), these are the obvious things to look at.
RAM is not likely to be a problem. If it were a mobo problem your entire machine would likely freeze or reboot, and probably not just when using the DVD or CD burner. If everything else seems to work properly, it's likely Nero 6 or a firmware upgrade to your burners ir SP2. The solution to Nero 6 is to buy a used Nero 5.5.X version and upgrade your ASPI layer to let it work with XP; the solution to a firmware upgrade is to flah your firmware back to the previous firmware where everything workd. The solution to SP2 is to strip out SP2 but that also strips out SP1 which was actually a useful patch, so you might as well just do a full data backup, wipe your hard drive and reinstall XP without SP2. -
Thanks for the response. Here are my points:
1) Many people say Nero 6 is crap, but I did burn with it fine for several weeks/months.
2) I reinstalled Windows a couple weeks ago. Yes, when I reinstalled I put SP2 on here. However, I had SP2 before the reinstall and it was working fine (up until a couple weeks before the reinstall).
3) I have 4 drives (and had 3 before the Windows reinstall). I always put the files on a different drive than the Windows drive. They may have been fragmented, but always worked. I can't exactly defrag at the moment since I dont have enough free space.
I am having a hard time figuring out what might have caused this, because I didn't change any system configurations when it started having problems. It worked one day, then the next not.
I have not updated any firmware.
I'm going to try one more burn now from a drive that I didn't try from before. This is with the latest chipset drivers (which froze the whole computer when trying the other day).
We'll see what happens.

Well I tried to burn. It doesn't even get started now...just says "Illegal Disc".
Tried two discs.
-Mark -
Even trying to play from one of my drives just freezes the computer (since the chipset upgrade I'm sure).
Any ideas on all this?
Thanks

Okay well I tried running memtest86. I let it go for over 5 passes, and not a single error.
I'm currently booted into Knoppix, trying to burn a DVD using K3b. First, it tells me that the disc is not formatted. So I go and format it. The format is successful it says. Now I try to burn. Everytime it says to me:
media is not formatted or unsupported
write failed: Wrong media type
Error while creating ISO Image
K3b detected a problem with the media
Please try another brand [blah blah blah]
Report the problem if it persists anyway
So, I pop in some new CDR media and try to burn a CD. The result?
Probably a buffer underrun occurred
Please choose a lower speed
I tried several speeds on down to 1x, same message every time.
This is odd. Is it the burner going out? I'm about to try to load Knoppix in the Sony drive and try to burn from my TDK (CD only, but if they both fail, then hmm).
Thanks very much in advance!

Okay well I tried burning CD's in my TDK VeloCD only, while running Knoppix from the DVD Burner.
Same problems.
Anyone?

Okay, I was just looking in Event Viewer to try to find a problem related to another application (randomly freezing and using up 100% CPU). I couldn't find anything on that problem, but I see several things in "System" related to "cdrom". Here are some:
I see several of these:
