  1. First of all, thank you to everyone who's provided such good information on this forum. I've learned soo much about how to best back up my DVD's. But now I have a problem that I'm wondering if others have run into, and if so, how I can solve it.

I run Windows XP on a computer my friend built for me. I have a sony DVD writer, and I use DVD-decrypter, VOB blanker, and DVD shrink to back up my DVDs. This had worked wonderfully for a while, then one day when starting up my computer, it told me that /windows/system32/config/system was corrupted, and it couldn't start. So, it being windows, I thought nothing of it, found the solution online, copied the requisite files, performed a scandisk, where it repaired a bad sector, and went back along my merry way.

Now, it's happened a couple times since then, but now I've noticed a pattern. There seems to be a direct correlation between when I burn DVD's, and when I get this error. More specifically, it seems to happen more if I burn multiple DVD's, one after another. So I'm starting to think that there's more going on than just the shoddy craftmanship of windows.

Has anyone else had this or a similar experience? If so, how did you fix it? I appreciate any help I can get on this issue.

No problems here. Do you have virus/malware detection software installed? Could be something nasty has infected your PC.

I would run Adaware, and do a virus scan. I would also suggest that you load and run the HD diagnostic software for your HD. It could be going bad, if you are getting bad sectors.

You should also tell us what software are you using for burning, DVD Burner name, and DVD Burner firmware version. This may help someone get you an answer.
Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

  4. I second the HD diagnostics. Eventhough scandisk is suppossed to mark bad sectors as unusable, it's no gaurantee of a safely operating hard drive.
