I am trying to find a way to remaster mpeg video I have, darken, add color. What is the best way to do so without losing quality?

Aside from the brightness and other controls in your media player, the only other way to edit the video is to remaster. Any time you remaster you loose quality.

  4. Open your mpeg in VDubMod, save a sample of it as an AVI using a codec like HuffYUV or an MJPEG codec like PicVideo's, and then edit & re-encode back to mpeg and see if it looks adequate enough for you. If so, do the whole thing that way. If not, well, I'm out of ideas. Mpeg is a finished project, and editing only serves to further degrade quality. Capturing stuff to mpeg to be edited later is just amateurish, and guarantees shoddy, second rate results IMHO. You should never do this, as I'm sure you are aware by now if you weren't already.
