  1. I just picked up a few 50 packs of Staples' brand DVD+R's for about $8 each. I think it's a one week offer. I had to go to 2 stores though, the first was sold out. I'll give them a try and tell y ahow they turn out.

According to this site they are as follows:

    DVD-R 8X - CMC MAG
    DVD-R 8X - FUGIFILM 03
    DVD-R 4X - OPTICDISCR004

    DVDR-RW - OPTICDISCW002

    DVD+R - 8x - MBIPG101R04
    DVD+R - 4x - OPTODISCOR4

The down side of this is that they have only one to five comments on each of the types.

It is a good price for expermentation tho.

  4. 15.9 cents a disk. He thinks to himself, How low can they go!

Anyway I just tried out the +R IO bought and they seem to be working OK.

According to DVD Decrypter they are, Disc ID: CMC MAG-E01-00

I'm thinking about trying for more tomorow. They had a decent stock when I was there this morning, Once I found them. They weren't on the shelves with the rest of the media. They were on an isle end.

I may try the -R this time.

    Cheers

  5. damn well CMC isnt considered good media. I was thinking of making backups of all my movies but Im sure these dvds will be unreadable after about a year, and I def. dont want that happening. Now the fuji is a different story. Any way to make sure the -R we get are fujis? Any difference between the CMC -Rs?

I just bought a pack myself, didnt try any of them yet, but I've never had any problems with cmc media, or any media for that matter, maybe I'm just lucky. Anyways there was this old couple that were looking at them, there was probably 10 packs there, I took one and went to look around the store, when I came back I saw the old couple took all but 1 pack! I hate ppl like that, never save anything for others, they're probably going to sell it on ebay. That just really got on my nerves, I could only buy 1 pack anyways, otherwise I would have said something.

CMC is considered good media by myself and many others, I've burned close to a thousand on 3 different burners and they are excellent discs. I have several hundred that are about 2 years old and they all still play flawlessly and scan with low errors.

Now Fuji IS a different story, the Fujifilm media coded discs I've tried don't burn as well as my CMC media. They burn decently and play fine most of the time, just not as low of PI/PO errors and the transfer rate tests aren't that good. But they usually play OK. I've used alot of the 8x CMC AE1 discs and they burn great on my burners, but the AE1 discs seem to struggle on some burners until the firmware is upgraded.

This is an awesome price for these discs, of course I don't have a Staples where I'm at....

  10. Well I just opened up the -R from staples and it has a media code of: Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG. AE1

So it looks like both the +& - here in New Jersey are CMC. FWIW The Somerville NJ store had plenty left this Monday morning. At these prices it totaly isn't worth it on a per Gigabyte basis to use CD-Rom disks.

The staples-brand disks (-r) that I have are:
    (from dvd_Identifier v3.6.3.1)

    Code:
    ------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:FUJIFILM03]
    ------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]

    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB
                              = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
    ------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ------------------------------------------------------
These work flawlessly in my dvd recorder (220-s) unit.
I've never had a problem yet.

    @ $8 dollars for 50 *is* a great deal, (mine cost $14.99 for a 25pk)

I'll have to check them out.
(I like to just pop in an -R disk for quick tv shows - for the heck of it. And
a 50pk @ $8 bucks sounds like not to bad a deal to waste on quicky records)

Thanks for the heads up on this price break-through.

I was actually able to get the 50-pack of Staples DVDs for only $4.35 (thats only 9 cents per each DVD!).

    Here's how (from FatWallet.com):

    1) go to Staples.com
    2) choose a Chicago zipcode (ie, 60602)
    3) look at their weekly ad ... the 50-pack DVD is $4.94 ... print off this ad
    4) go to http://www.staplescentral.com/customerAppreciation/customerappreciation.htm to print off a special 12% off coupon
    5) take both printouts to your nearest Staples store, for a store price-match and coupon for 12% off that.
    6) net total is $4.35 per 50-pack!

They are the 8X CMC type. Hope this helps!

  16. oh cool thanks. Well printed out everything brought it to a staples and the manager wouldnt price match because it is a grand-opneing special since they just opened 2 new stores in Chicago. He did take the 12% off though so thanks.

Sorry to hear they would not price match. However, that is against their stated price match policy.

If you check http://www.staples.com/content/Help/Using/general_match.asp , it states :

"What if I find a lower price at Staples?

If you find a lower price in one of our stores, catalogs or on Staples.com®, we’ll match the lower price, however the additional 10% of the price difference does not apply. If an item is marked "clearance", the clearance price is only valid for in stock product that is marked at that clearance price."

I would see the store manager, show them their policy, and have him give you the price difference. Good luck!

  18. holy sh*t. I did speak to the manager the guy was a total As*hole he tol dme 20 times that since its a new store he wont match it. Now I am pissed he simply told me that he wont match it at all grrrrr.. Good thing I have the reciept. What should I do if he still doesn't want ot match it? When I asked him what the matching price policy is he said that it says they DO NOT price match prices where the store is a new "grand opening"
    Quote Quote
  19. Well actually he was right. IT says that on grand opening the price matches is not available.

Which items and services aren’t available for price-match?

We don’t match our store prices to those on other companies’ web sites. We don’t price match our third-party providers' products and services (e.g., Sprint® service, tax preparation, payroll services, and custom printing), items sold on auction sites or at local or special events (e.g., grand opening, anniversary or liquidation sales). We don’t price match taxes and typographical errors.

I would ask him to SHOW you where in the price match policy that they do not price match Staples "grand-opening" stores. Then show him the price match policy that you printed off (or give him the above link where the policy is located) where it specifically states "If you find a lower price in one of our stores, catalogs or on Staples.com®, we’ll match the lower price".

The way I see it, you are covered in all three areas: 1) they are selling the DVD pack for $4.94 at "one of their stores", 2) you are presenting a catalog page of the $4.94 price, and 3) you found that $4.94 price on Staples.com.

If the manager still will not accept that, I would mention that you will report him to the main Staples headquarters, and follow up with reporting him to the headquarters. Get his full name and store number. Staples wants satisfied customers, and frown upon managers who cannot keep their customers happy. And usually, they will give you something extra (discounts and such) for all of your trouble.

That specifically applies to other sellers or stores outside of Staples. The grand-opening mentioned applies to other stores, not Staples grand-openings.

  22. hmm it doesnt neccesarily say 3rd party though. It start the next sentence saying that things arent covered are local, and special events such as grand openings... I will try though.

Well, i picked up 2 spools of these discs yesterday in NYC.
Burned a few discs in my Memorex 4x dual format unit, with
    no problems.

However, havent been able to get any to burn in my Pioneer
a09, i keep getting errors before burning starts.

Anyone esle have any issues with these discs NOT burning?
I'm using Dvd Decrypter in both places.

  25. What you ppl using to determine the error rates on their burned disk? I'm using the DVD+R CMC on a Plextor 708 (FW1.1) and Nec 2500, so K-Probe (Lite-on) isn't a option. I'm not sure how well these disc burn at 8x. I've burned about 20 discs so far on my Plextor, I've had one disc write fail at the region where 4x turns to 8x. And I've had two disc w/ small gaps btwn the area of 4x and 8x.

  26. Well FWIW, I've been using these since last sunday (1st day of sale) and they all play fine even when filled out to the edge. I tend to watch the compare speed when it does a data verify and if I see a dip in speed then I look further.
