  1. Hi, got one of these drives in my spanking new G4 17" Powerbook, and can't seem to find a firmware upgrade for it to enable it to read other regions (it's locked onto region 1 at the minute...).

Any advice? I read on another thread in this forum (https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=269090&highlight=matshita+uj845) that it's unlikely that this drive will ever get an upgrade. I don't know why the poster says so. Anybody has heard anything regarding this one?

    Thanks, people.

Well, seeing as how us with the Matshita UJ-825 dont have a region firmware yet. We probably wont have one. Also now that XVI has retired...or stopped trying, we probabky will never have one. My suggestion is get a firewire case and a Pioneer DVR-108 or 109

  3. Who is XVI? (forgive my ignorance, please) If it's a person, surely there has to be more than one on this planet doing the job. Right?

UPDATE: Ok, I *was* ignorant. Just saw his website as cached on Google. So back to my point from before: you mean, there's *no-one* else???

Prettymuch. Apple hasnt released an update for this drive yet, so the coders dont have any file to work with to change the code.

  5. Do you mean that this kind of hacks require that Apple or someone else provides some independent code (i.e. not embedded in the device already) so that someone with the skills can break it down and alter it a bit and issue that much needed hack?

Did XVI spend all his time doing the above for as many different devices as possible for fun?

Yup. Thats about right. I am not sure exactly what XVI did. i just know he was numero uno at getting firmware hacks out.

For reasons I posted in that other thread a few minutes ago before seeing this one. My two months of forum catch-up is still in progress.
