I'm triying to encode an avi file to a vcd. I can't see the file with quicktime (there is a program error). I have all codecs installed (divx, 3ivx and ac3). I can play the movie with vlc. As it says the tutorial "how to convert avi to vcd" I try to encode with mplayer. When I drop the avi file into the ffmpegx area it says From: Unrecognized, No Video and No Audio. What can I do? Please Help me.

Open the file in VLC. Pause the movie if you like. Open the Info window (Cmd-I). There should be listed 'Stream 0' and 'Stream 1' with little triangles. Press the triangles to get more detailed information. 'Stream 0' will likely be video; what codec is used? 'Stream 1' will likely be audio; what codec is used?

I tried to do this, but no way. In the Source format it still says "unrecognized". I selected DivX mencoder from the quick pressets but encoding fails.

Please email me the output messages (blue "i" icon) to major4@mac.com for closer inspection.

D-Vision 2 used to directly process .ogm files, but I'm not sure if the current version (3) does what you need. Try going to versiontracker.com and getting a copy of "OGMTools", and run the installer (if any), or open your terminal and cd to the folder/directory that the ogmtools are in. One of them will be "ogmdemux". You may have to change the name of your original .avi file (which seems to really be an .ogm file with its extension changed) to reflect the proper extension -- change the .avi to .ogm -- or this may be unnecessary. Anyway, if there's an installer that'll put the OGMTools in the right place, you should be able to open your terminal, type "ogmdemux", hit the spacebar once, then drag your .ogm file into the terminal (which will automatically type in the file name and path), and hit return. This should break apart your .ogm into a video-track .avi and an audio-track .ogg file. You can use iTunes to convert that .ogg to an mp3, then use ffmpegX to recombine your .avi with your new .mp3 soundtrack.

Thankyou adamntius I thought there was anythig to do with this ogg files. Actually I'm doing something simmilar to your explanation but using virtual pc and virtualdub to split the sound and video, transform the audio to mp3 and adding the mp3 audio to the avi file. Then when I have an avi file, return to mac ffmpegx then encode with divx mencoder and after that, encoding the resulting file to svcd. Too long process for me, isn't it? So i'm going to try what you tell me. Thanks. I will explain here the results.

If you use OGMTools, remember that the demuxed files will probably be in your home directory, not necessarily in the folder you started in. It works quite quickly. There may be better tools out there for re-encoding your .ogg to .mp3, or you may have a way to go straight to .mp2, .mpa or .m2a, and eliminate a step. Quicktime used to have an .ogg codec available so you could import the .ogg into Quicktime, then export it into whatever sound format you wanted, but it's been a long time since I've used it. Just make sure you comply with whatever standard (i.e. constant or variable bitrate in the right range) is appropriate for your SVCD. I had to stop using Quicktime for this because I always seemed to end up with VBR when I needed CBR sound.

Well, you can make an .avi with both video and sound using either ffmpegX or D-Vision, by re-encoding, but passing the video stream through unchanged, and adding the new audio track as if it were a second track (only in this case it's the first). Because you're passing the video through, this will be quite quick to do, and you'll get a new .avi with both video and sound. You can then do whatever you want with it as normally.
You may be able to go straight to SVCD, though, by doing the usual encoding, and adding in, again, a "second" soundtrack via the audio tab in ffmpegX. I'm not certain you can do it that way under mpeg2enc or ffmpeg mpeg2, but I imagine it's possible if you experiment a bit.
Be careful about the bitrate of the audio: if it's variable when it should be constant, or vice versa, you may get a badly out-of-sync new recording.
