Got a new dvd/cd bookcase that tripled my storage space.

Been doing an awful lot of captures and burning them to DVD.

I prefer jewel cases to the larger DVD cases, but I can't figure out how to use the slimlines with a usable spine title so that I can read what's in the case without pulling it off the shelf.

I've been using regular or double size jewel cases.

But space is getting tight again. Anyone using slims and how do you tell what's in the case without pulling it off the shelf? Suggestions?

I use slim-line cases exclusively to save space. I use notepad to create spine labels and scotch tape those to the case. It takes some time to create them since you have to cut, fold, and tape, but i've not been able to find a better solution. Easy viewing . . . small shelf footprint, slim line cases are definitely what I need.

  3. im in the same boat as this guy. I can't stand the thought of putting my stuff in cd or slim dvd cases tho it all has to go in synch
DVD region settings are a joke, I can't believe how stupid people are falling for it

  4. You might want to try disk binders.

I use them to group TV shows, Home Videos and bonus DVDs. My Entertainment Center on holds VHS and CD cases. So, I have Single and Double CD case to hold the movies.

For the TV shows, like Sex an the City, I have a case binder that holds 20 disks just for them. I have another binder that holds 120 for the bonus DVDs. (Only a few that I really watch) Same for my home videos

I can insert a Label in the clear spine on the case to let me know what is what.

Just a idea. True you lose the "pretty" DVD cases, but your not watching them. Some people like to show it as braging rights to their collection. For me, that doesn't pass the WAF. All of my cases and binders are behind doors.
For the love of God, use hub/core labels on your Recordable Discs!

    EAO,
I use dual jewel cases. It cuts my storage space in half, and I can still
print both titles on the spine so I don't have to sift through them to find what I want.

I take the opposite approach. Rather than using slim cases, I use DVD cases that hold hold up to 10 disks per box. This can reduce the width of the collection to about 20% of that when using "regular" DVD cases and gives plenty of room on the spine for a label. You could...

    1. Throw out/Donate/Sell movies you don't watch anymore

    2. Buy slimline cases, or simple paper sleeves, or even cakebox spindles (and store the covers)[kinda like some libraries do-hint, hint]

    3. Encode to DivX/WMV/etc the stuff you don't watch anymore, put it on a backup, and store the original.

    4. Buy more shelves/bigger house, etc.

Honestly, you should consider yourself lucky to have the available cash to have gotten into this "predicament".

    (Old fogey rant starts here)
I remember at the height of my LP buying days in college, I had ~600 LPs. Now THAT took up some major real estate, and was back-breakingly heavy, to boot. I dragged them through at least 6 apartment moves before I started selling them off and trading up/converting to CDs (while buying new stuff in CD format all the while). CD's DVDs are EASY compared to that!
    (/end Old fogey rant)

HAHAHA! now that's a good one. I was at a store one day waiting in line to check out and over the radio PA was some song playing the chipmunks or something that sounded like it. I said to the cashier (a young girl) that it sounds like somebody has the record on 78 speed. She looked at me like i was from Mars. The kid (young male) who was bagging my groceries asked me what 78 speed was. I tried to explain it, but I couldn't get much beyond the "Large Black rubberized" looking discs his parents had played at a speed that was too fast for the recording.

    LP's are those discs.

    Gods I feel old.

Is there any place that sells spine labels for these slim cases?

  10. Try a Sony 400 DVD player. I can store all my DVDs and have a menu that displays all of them. Though since I know where most of my DVDs are I just zoom right to it and don't use the disc explorer which is kinda slow. I'll upgrade to the new model this summer. You could make things easy by keeping a list with the title and the slot number. That way you avoid the disc navigator all together.

They don't make a jukebox large enough to hold my decades worth of DVD collecting.

I have over 1000 DVDs in my library now...I suspect they breed while I am asleep :P...and I HAD to go to binders...I would suggest that of you go that route to get a high quality binder...they can be more expensive but they protect the disks better...

Nope. Don't like binders. I prefer shelving units. I have three shelving units for discs. These shelves hold 725 slim cases. The third shelving unit is starting to fill up, so i'll be picking up another.

I just wish there was some affordable way to label these case spines. With my current method of windows notepad, a printer, a pair of scissors and some tape it works and makes for easily finding a movie, game, or archive, but when they aren't in the shelving unit, it's kinda unpolished looking. I don't really care, but i have heard comments from others on this method of labeling the slim cases.

  17. I use the slimline jewel cases for CDs and DVDs too. I did a photoshop template with 6 point type that had to be carefully, very carefully, cut and folded to fit on the inside of the clear cover at the spine. If placed perfectly, the type would be readable. I held it in place with glue from one of those glue stick thingys. It worked, but was a lot of work. Now I just pile them up and dig through them. I can hold about twenty in my hand against my chest and just flip flip flip.

  18. You have to order them in a file cabinet or bookcase like Blockbuster and keep the list on Excel or something. These guys at Blockbuster and EB Games or else don't have that many drawers and I don't think you have more than Blockbuster do you?

I have them alphabetized by title and use a movie organizing software with all the information you could possibly need about these movies. i don't have more than Blockbuster, but I do have friends who borrow movies from me because the local blockbuster or other video stores don't carry any good older titles.
