I will put up a new post as my question on DVD disk shelf life addresses another aspect.

DVD seller at last Sunday Swap meet said that Azo dyes (usually dark) are only better if you have a weak burner and that this dye is easier to burn.

He also said that once burnt successfully the data on DVDs should be OK for a long time if stored sensibly re temp, humidity and light and dust.

I personally have not yet had any error read problems on any CDs of varied brands up to 6 years old (TDK Gold mainly) and no problems as yet with DVDs of a variety of brands.

If stored sensibly, has anyone ever had any read problems from DVDs once they have been burnt successfully.

I believe storage in a spindle case is best especially for keeping out dust.

    Can't say for the dyes.

As far as storage, I know they are sold in spindles but I don't trust keeping them parallel to the shelf stacked that way for years. I worry about warping. IMO, DVD cases tend to encourage vertical storage so commercial ones are in their original cases standing on end and burned ones are in plastic or paper sleeves standing vertically in old 5 1/4 diskette boxes or in in 24 to 32 sleeve zippered disc holders.
