Okay, so I've ripped the 5 Vobs from the DVD that comprise this particular movie, and now I want to convert said movie to DivX.

However, I can't figure out how to join the 5 Vobs in virtualdub. Can this even be done in virtualdub?

Also, if I do have to join them in another programme, does this mean I have to output them as an uncompressed avi file first?

Have you tried autogk or fairuse wizard? Great dvd to divx tools.

If you want to use virtualdub use dgindex and frameserve to virtualdub, click on dgindex for a guide.

And this is more dvd to avi then editing. moving you.

I turn off file-splitting and rip to one big VOB, then use Virtualdubmod or Virtualdub-mpeg2 to open it directly.
    If in doubt, Google it.

You could also just use DVD Decrypter and have it extract to one vob file and use VDub-Mpeg2 to open the VOB and save to AVI.

I agree with Baldrick, fairuse wizard is a really good tool for this sort of thing.

Edit: Sorry, I was typing while Jimmalenko was posting and missed it!

That sounds easier, How do you make DVD decrypter extract multiple Vobs to one Vob?

Thanks for the info guys, sarcasm noted

One thing though: I have read many DVD to DivX (using virtualdub and DVD Decrypter) guides online. None of them have mentioned this fairly simple process (which was in the link you gave above) for making DVD Decrypter rip a movie to a single Vob:

    1. Insert DVD and start DVD Decrypter.
    2. Click Tools/Settings/IFO Mode Tab.
    3. In the File Splitting Option select NONE, then click OK.
    4. Click Mode/IFO.
    5. Click the Input Tab and you will see the Program(s) & Chapter(s).
    6. Select the Program you wish to rip.
    7. Choose your Destination and Rip. (May take a fe minutes.)

Sure it seems simple once you know about it, but for people making their first DivX's, don't you think it's a vital piece of info to include on guides and FAQs?

  9. One giant vob could be problematic..w98 or other OS. the defaults in DD work very well.

  10. Why not convert each VOB to sequential AVI files, then just use cat in unix or copy in DOS to concatinate the AVI parts into one AVI? This way you're never dealing with an unmanagably enormous file.

update: I've discovered that AVI file concatination does not work. Although the file still plays, the scroll bar does not account for the size of the whole file, just the first one. I'm now looking for an AVI concatination tool.
