  1. hi,
do i have to do as it says on nec site.

Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master, use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

    Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

or is this just nec covering themselves?
would like to know if i really have to bother doing all of this?

  2. This is just NEC trying to put out every precaution they can possibly think of. In reality none of this is necessary, they are basically just trying to avoid any source of a system freeze-up during the Firmware flash. I've had a dozen programs running at once and flashed to my NEC 1300 and 2500 countless times in 'standard' Win XP mode, in USB external enclosures no less. Of course I used hacked firmware as well, and yet I've still NEVER had any issues whatsoever.
