I have a OLD 1980s Beta video that was copied to a VHS tape in the mid 90s. I think it was even recorded in SLP or something. ICK. The original is gone.

I've seen the filter chains with unfold, dnr, smooth, fold, chroma, hue then resize to Half D1. (that's my target resolution)

I use VirtualDubMod and Procoder and DVDLab.

Can someone help me with a filter chain to correct the red horizontal lines and the noise?

    Thanks,

    LS

Also, the color of the entire picure came out very blue and is this way on the original. I was able to adjust the hue some to fix it but it came out almost black and white.

The chroma and other filters do not seem tohave any documentation that I can find that explain how to use them.

Would not waste my time in software. You need hardware. Proc amps, TBCs, detailers, etc. Software will not be able to do as good a job, nor as much. I will say that image is not horrible, it can very likely be corrected, I deal with tapes like that quite a bit. It would not be "perfect" but it would be A WHOLE LOT BETTER.

Since i haven't gotten any advice I played around with some filters, not having a clue as to what they do. I came up with a chain that seems to fix it fairly well. The red lines are 95% gone and the blue color is gone. I've lost some color but not bad.

    Will have to do.

    Thanks,

    LS

Here is the result with filters. I have no idea what they do or how to adjust them, but with some playing this is the best I could get it.

  7. I would say that the Best way to do this would be a "Frame By Frame" correction,Capture in the best quality you can,and edit each frame."Would take a long time,But you can Make a script for Photoshop or Paintshop to do multi Edits,So you dont have to do the same thing over and over for each Frame.

    Just my 2Cents..

All that chroma noise needs hardware filtering. Even all those software filters look like crap still. What Canadateck did in software is probably as best as it would get in software alone. On a video this far gone, your best bet is to pay a service to fix it.

The original Beta is gone and the noise is on the VHS that way. ick...

I encoded it just like it is and they LOVE IT! Of couse they've only seen it on teh VHS before, so any cleanup or smoothing of it will look great to them.

    Thanks for the help!

The VHS can be fixed. Beta not needed.

When watching it on the TV you barely notice the chroma noise. The video actually turned out alright. I watched it on my 36" but have not tried it on my big screen.

I used VirtualDubMod with the filter list I will attach. The picture above is from VD screen capture. The encoded version with ProCoder 2 is much better on the TV.

    MSU_Smart Sharpen (overall)
    Video DeNoise (default)
    Britness / Contrast
    HSV adjust
    temporal smoother ( 5 )
    de-interlace ( fold )

    More advance technics:

Pretty good, but if you want to take it to a whole new level, try AviSynth with the following denoiser - http://bag.hotmail.ru/fft3dfilter/fft3dfilter.dhtml
