  1. I'd like to get an internal DVD burner for my P2 350mhz 384 mb RAM PC running Win98. How important are system requirements listed by manufacturers? I wouldn't load any of the software just the hardware and only really plan to use DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink to make backups. These programs currently work fine on my current system (mentioned above) for ripping, I just have no means of burning. And I don't want to choke my system. I know I'm in need for an upgrade, but figured if it ain't broke don't fix it.

The transcoding through Shrink might be a little slow, but it will still work.

The DVD burner itself doesn't use much in the way of resources, so I would go ahead with your plan and also save up for a future system upgrade.

Your present system is acceptable for what you want to do, though it will take a little longer than a system with higher specs.

  4. I burn on a pii 333 dell machine with 256mb ram. - the manufacturer recommendation for my Benq burner suggest a minimum machine of much higher specs.

I manage 4x burns that take 15 minutes or 8x burns that usually take around 10 minutes - maybe a little less. I don't usually do anything else on this machine while I'm burning a dvd.

The burns are successful - although I had a little bit of a problem with Nero - too many coasters. May have been a corrupt installation of Nero but I'm not sure as I've been using Clonedvd2 more than Nero lately and haven't had a single coaster with it. The last 2 Nero burns after I reinstalled Nero were 100% successful.
