  1. Version tracker posted this link today, but it's not clear what it is or how to et it.

I already have the MPEG 2 playback 6.5 from Final Cut Pro installation. I might need to get a new one for QT7, but I'm not sure why I need this one (if it exists) for QT6. The download link takes one to a page of information, but no link from there to download—only purchase. FCP's users in the pat received free updates. I could see Apple charging for the QT7 version (although only if FCP 4HD were to not function at all in Tiger) but I'm guessing this verion should still be a free update (for QT6). bottom line, trhere seems to be no v7 update on the site.

The MPEG-2 component for QuickTime has never been a free upgrade
Price: $19.99 is the same its always been.
Now why doesn't it support AC3?

  3. But it was bundled with FCP and DVDSP. And when a new version came out, one could get it by entering your serial number for these products.

Well they figgure if you shell out for them, since the program won't work without the mpeg-2 component, they'd better include it!
Upgrade it not free from 6 to 7 but from 6.2 to 6.x should be free I agree there!..

  5. But the name is confusing. Is it the MPEG 2 playback for Quicktime 7? If so, why is it called Quicktime 6? If it's not for QT 7, what does it offer to QT6 users who have the previous version. And bottom line—there doesn't seem to be a clear explaination on the Apple site. Only a link to give them $19.

  6. They do this every time. You needed to get an updated MPEG-2 playback thingy for 6.5.2 or whatever.

I bought it years ago and, near as I can tell, I download the same file from the Apple Store (over and over) and it unlocks a Quicktime feature.

    It's a pain.

seems like the simplest thing to do would be this:
If you have QT 7, install your QT 6 MPEG-2 plug-in
in your Quicktime folder, and see if you still have functionality.
then post back the results here.

Updates could be downloaded in the past from the APPLE store page from where you downloaded the component after you had bought it.

I checked it but maybe we just have to wait a little until it is available there.

    Wishful thinking?

    Cheers,

The QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 playback plugin works just fine in QuickTime 7.

  10. I just did a quick check to see what, if anything, happened to my QuickTimeMPEG2 files after installing QuickTime 7.

All the various componenents are still there, either in original form or an updated one, date-wise.

Interestingly, the new QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg file is date March 2, 2005. Given that today is April 30, I wonder what's going on with that ...
