  1. I am trying to convert my home videos from vhs to dvd. I have already copied them to my hardrive into a 10.4G mpg file. I am now trying to get them ready to copy to dvd. I have looked through the forums and have tried several different programs and techniques but none seem to be working. What is the easiest way to convert the 10.4G mpg to dvd? I am obviously doing something wrong. I have tried using WinAvi and Ulead Dvd Movie Factory 2 to try converting.

What's the specs on your MPEG file ?

Is it DVD-compliant ? (hint: GSpot 2.52Beta screencap would be good here )

You want it on a SL DVD, or a DL DVD ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. I would like to copy it onto a single layer dvd if possible. Is this what you were referring to?

  4. Best method would have been to capture to multiple files, each small enough to fit on one disk.

Option now is to cut into 2 or 3 files. Depending on your encoding methods and cutting software, this may or may not yield satisfactory results.

Or you could blow massive amounts of quality and re-encode.

  5. The problem is your 10G file exceeds the limits of a 4.7G DVD.
    Its too big.

If you don't want to split to several DVD's here's what to do:
Use DVD Moviefactory to output to folders on your harddisk rather than burn to DVD. It will output the whole 10G.

Then use DVD Shrink to compress the files to fit onto 4.7G.
You may lose some quality but its amazing how well this works and many times your eye can't see the diffrence on a normal TV.

Then burn the shrunk folders to 1 DVD.

I tried outputing the mpg to folders on hard drive using Ulead Dvd Movie Factory. I get the error "cannot create file". Any suggestions?

Most likely the reason you can't create the file is you don't have enough hard drive space. Click the icons on the lower left of the screen and look at preferences to see where your temp work folder is. Also when you create the folders click on advanced to see where the created folders are going. If you are producing a 10G file you will need at least 10G in the work area AND in the output area. Either delete some files to make space or change the target areas where you already have the space.
