Used several deinterlace methods (smart, field, kernel, areabased, blend, etc.) in Vdubmod/Avisynth and still end up with little jagged edges in output video. Not sure why. Origial VOB is NTSC and at least 1/5 frames have combing effects.

I'm giving it to someone who wants to watch it on the PC.

  4. If 1/5 frames are interlaced then it is not true interlaced stream, but rather telecined (pulldowned). So you should not deinterlace, but perform IVTC -> inversed telecine, to recover 23.976 progressive content.
Hmm, I reread the first post, and it seems I didn't understand correctly. Well, you have to analyse the frames in VDubMod - if they are 3 progressive followed by 2 interlaced (or it was the opposite ) then your stream is telecined.

You also need to check the original carefully. If the video was edited after it was telecined then the 3:2 pattern may not be consistant across the full movie. You need to check the telecine pattern accross multiple scenes to determine if it was edited before or after the telecine process. If it was edited after telecine, then it's a huge project to return it to a progressive state.

Original VOB is 29.97. I analyzed the frames in Vdub and definitely combing in the 5th frame only. At regular speed video looks like it is entirely combed. When I ran it in DGIndex it said VOB was Interlaced. An expert at Doom09 told me that DGIndex will not give the correct answer sometimes. Thanks much.

  7. While in DGIndex you look at percentage NTSC film - > if it is 95% or more you can use Force film option in DGIndex.

  8. That wasn't just any expert at Doom9. That was neuron2 (Donald Graft), the man who wrote all the filters you've been trying. I also find it strange that only the 5th frame is interlaced unless this is an anime, where all the duplicate frames often screw up the 3:2 pattern of progressive:interlaced frames. I say make the .d2v without ForceFILM and then put on IVTC and have a look in VDubMod before doing the encoding. If it is some sort of animation, have a look at the Decomb guide, as it has some special settings for animation.
