    Hi,
I was just trying to burn the movie "Manchurian Candidate" from avi files that I had on my computer using Nero Vision Express 3. After making the menus and all that, I tried to burn the movie, however, it failed in the prepare stage. I got the error "Unable to prepare data for recording: Prepare Session Failed: Transcoding of video files failed." It ran through the menu portion fine and only got this error when it was preparing the movie files. I was just wondering if anyone knows what this error is and how to fix it.
*EDIT* Also, with this movie, whenever I'm previewing in Nero (such as when I'm making chapters), there is no sound. All the other movies I have work. Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not.

Also, whenever I merge two avi files into one title using the merge option, Nero wont let me make main menus, just the chapter menu for that title. This happened with another movie too and the movie burned fine so its not related to the above problem. I would just like to make a main menu as well. but that is secondary, First I would like to solve the above problem. Thanks.

  2. I think you should just buy the dvd because what you are trying to do is illegal.

How is converting an avi file on my computer to DVD illegal?? I already own the original movie. I put my movies from home on my computer at college as avi files. And now I wanted to turn that avi file back into a DVD. I wanted to try new ways rather then just backing up the DVD.

*EDIT* And if it truely is illegal, thanks for letting me know, I dont watn to get in trouble. Is there a legal way to do this or is the whole thing illegal? I usually just back up my DVD's normally, but wanted to try this to try making my own menues and stuff as a learning experience.

  4. Well sorry I assumed since you have the movie in avi format and wanted to convert it to DVD you had illegally downloaded it from the internet. What you are doing is kinda a waste of time per say becuase you are loosing quality. The reason is becuase when you convert DVD to avi you loose some then you loose some more converting it back to DVD. If you have the original disc it would be better to rip the movie to your hard drive with a program like dvdshrink in DVDAuthor mode (so it wouldnt have menus) then remake the dvd in TDA and give it menus and such. This would save you time and not loose as much of the quality.

PS: If I were you I'd just make a standard backup with Nero Recode.

PS: It is breaking illegal to desemble a dvd and give it new menus in alot of countries. It has to do with breaking copyrights.

Thanks, but I dont have TDA. I know I would loose quality and stuff, I was probably going to burn the DVD then literally burn it after I saw if it worked or not. The reason is I already know how to do a backup of a DVD and I just wanted to try something knew as a learning experience. I'm going for engineering, I enjoy problems and figuring stuff out and doing research, along with trial and error this site is my means of research. If you do know how to solve my problem though I would still like to know. Thanks for your suggestion about TDA, if I had it I would give it a try. My 30 day trial ran out a little while ago. I did have Nero for burning my DVD's so I figured I'd give this a shot now.

And I do want to stick to legal rules so if at any point the things I do become illegal please feel free to let me know and I will find alternate means. Quick question regarding that, as long as I keep my DVD's that I back up, I can make as many copies as I want right? Like using different ways of doing it, as I am doing now.

ImToo DVD Ripper I dont remember the settings and whatnot. My cousin did most of it when he was reformatting my computer. That was before I got all into this stuff. Maybe I should try again by myself. The file plays fine in winamp. with audio and everything.
