I am looking for a database to sort avi files so that I could quickly run queries and pull up clips to use in Sony Vegas. If you could store your avi files in access it would be perfect. Does anyone know how I could set this up? Right now I am running my queries, printing them, and pulling the corresponding number avi file.

    Thanks for the help

This may be better served by moving to the "Computer" forum -- do you want to store the actual avi files in some sort of database, or just the file info to look up more easily based on whatever descriptive info you're looking for?

I'm assuming the latter because you mention access and do you mean Microsoft Access? If so, yeah, there are all sorts of database solutions that'll do what you want -- if you're looking for a particular Access database already pre-configured, we could help more if you give us a list of exactly what you're looking for (or hope to look for) and how you want it sorted (and again, ask in the "Computer" forum if the mods haven't moved this already). You could probably use an MS-Access wizard to get something basic but very workable in a few minutes.

So if you are indeed looking for an Access database solution, let us know what version of Access you're running and what info you want to sort on, do you need printing needs (reports and stuff), that sorta thing.

    Thanks for the reply,

This has to do with dv editing. I can already print any report that I need. I want the corresponding clips or avi files to come up, so I guess that I need to store them in some sort of database so that I can put them on the sony vegas time line in the order that I want them in.

I hope that clears my question up

Okay, got it. Well, I only know a little about Vegas, but depending on how many files we're talking about here, have you tried using the media bins feature? That would allow you to create virtual bins and links to your avi files (without having to actually move any files anywhere, just create pointers to the files) and you can edit all sorts of info about each file in each bin.

Then there's search engine with the Media Bin folder that allows you to search all these files based on whatever info. you input for each file. This would mean a fair amount of work at first, entering all the data, and you could only use it within Vegas, but it would do the job.

Or are you looking for some kind of external tool that will work with other editors as well?

I have about 1500 avi files. It is 2 camera angles of a whole football season. I made "cut ups" using different criteria, plays, coverages ect.
I was using the media bin for a while, good call by the way, it had a comment column that I sorted by, but I could not find a way to make my own columns. Also it would take a long time to open the veg file. After using it for a while, the veg file crapped out on me and quit opening up at all. I emailed it to vegas, but they never got back to me. I have the idea that that the media bin is not made to handle that many avi's.

Thanks for all the suggestions, if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know
