  1. From today's MacFixit:

"Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and QuickTime Pro

As noted by MacFixIt reader Scott Mahrer, QuickTime Pro 6 users who upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will not be able to use their current license codes for the newly included QuickTime Pro 7.

"I did verify with Apple's techs today that a Quicktime Pro version 6 key will not work with Tiger and Quicktime 7! Furthermore, the Apple Store does not know when Quicktime Pro 7 will be available, or how much it will cost to upgrade!

"I'm surprised that Apple is not doing more to make sure people know this before installing Tiger, which will render Quicktime Pro useless. Hopefully it will become available before April 29."

this has been the case with every major update to Quicktime.

    ie, QT 4 -> QT 5 -> QT 6 -> QT 7

    Exactly, decay. No surprises here.

Maybe it's not such a bad idea taking a break from the Mac online community until fallout from Tiger "early adopters" settles down.

From the QuickTime FAQ at the Apple website:

Will my QuickTime 4 or 5 Pro key work with QuickTime 6?
Because QuickTime 6 includes royalty-bearing technologies, a new QuickTime Pro key is required to unlock Pro functionality in QuickTime 6. If your key no longer works, visit the Apple Store to purchase a new one.

I guess the same applies to QT7.

Hmmm, what didn't we get from the big
Keynote in January, when Steve said:

"We are introducing Quicktime 7, something we are
extremely proud of, that comes [bold]bundled[/bold]
    with Tiger..."

let's see, given Apple's track record of bundling things
with other certain things (iLife '04 only with New superdrive
equipped macs being the biggest start of the whole
"bundling" thing, IMHO), it has never been a FREE upgrade
    for anything:

To get Jaguar it cost $129
to get Panther it cost $99
to get QT 6 Pro ( even if you had 4/5 Pro) $30/$50 w/MPEG-2
to get iLife 04 ( if you already had iMovie3 or iDVD3) $60
    to get iLife 05 $70

The days of FREE upgrades are long over...!

  7. And some of us will be paying for QT7 technology we may not need, or risk losing the QT6 features we use. Someone has suggested keeping QT6 around to use the pro features, but I'm not so sure it will still work in Tiger. Just moving the app to another location before installing Tiger won't accomplish much. One would have to move every little bit and byte (libraries, resources, etc). And later they would have to be moved back and be ab le to co-exist with the QT7 versions.

  8. I may be ranting, but we have to pay for the upgrade to Tiger, and we already paid for our QT pro, why do they have to charge us again? I know, Iknow, it's business. But it just seems that we should pay only once for a Pro key.

I dunno what everyone is complaining about. Do you have any idea how much Windows XP Pro costs? Or how much the PC equivilant of iLife 05 would cost? (if one existed that is)

The only thing we're complaining about is the fact that Apple has made it impossible for us to upgrade when TIGER is released.
We are bemoaning the fact that if we rely on QUICKTIME PRO functionality for our bread and butter, APPLE has once again released an OS that BREAKS our FOOD CHAIN..
Its not that we "need" to ugrade immediately, its that we want to know its doable withoput breaking stuff and a smooth process, and relatively inexpensive!

(the comparison to XP is an APT one...When the DEPT of JUSTICE told MICROSOFT that the OS cost too much..MICROSOFT voluntarily "complied" by releasing the cheaper XP HOME, without informing our GOVERNMENT (who doesn't know alot about IT)
that they would remove KEY features of the OS to make this price reduction, and that those who wanted the same feature set as WIN 98 had, would now be forced to pay the newly UPPED full retail for XP PRO at the outrageous $299.00 price-that'l teach those consumers not to force the GOV'T to mess with them!!!)

Well you do not NEED Tiger either. If you are currently getting your work done with the tools you currently own, then you are all set. Cost $0.
