  1. i downloaded an avi file that i want to make into a dvd. i used Nero vision express 2 to convert it to a bunch of VOB files that are: bit rate 5073kb per sec , 720 x 480 CCIR 601 and encoded it with 2 pass VBR. when i watched the result i noticed there are very slight skips happening frequently in the movie and it is 5 secounds shorter then the original AVI file. Does anyone know what is happening?

Could be bad frames in the source AVI, as is very common for "downloaded" AVI files, 'specially those floating around the P2P networks. If that's the case, slight skips is the best to hope for, when converting to video DVD.

How have you verified that the AVI is fine?
OTOH, what happens in oneclickwonder type of applications (like NVE) nobody (besides the creator) knows.
I suggest you try some of the AVI to DVD procedures, that doesn't use this type of applications, described under Convert, left. If nothing else, it's easier to pinpoint the problem, if each step in the process from AVI to Video DVD is made with a specialized app.

DivxtoDVD would produce better quality than NVE on any given day. It wil also tell you if you have any bad frames as it goes. As you said the video is shorter than the original, which would support bad frames being skipped along the way.
