    Hi,
I've just installed ffdshow, xvid, divx, lame-mp3, real alternative, quick time alternative, ac3 filters, ogg filter, sony DV, and I'm having some problems with editing XVID files uner virtual dub (the same files were fully editable before "format c:").

Playback in media player is ok but Virtual Dub shows this error while trying to play the file:

    Error initializing audio stream decompression:
The requesetd conversion is not possible.
Check to make suere you have the required codec.

Why is that playback is ok in Media Player but Virtual Dub doesn't want to read this XVID file properly?

    Try this...

The Virtualdub forums are a good place to get answers for Virtualdub problems, especially when you get them from the creator himself.

If you have an audio editor like Goldwave, it will convert the saved MP3.WAV to a usable wave file also.

Thanx for the reply I will move with my problem to the Virtual Dub Forum but maybe there is another solution? Maybe I could find some kind of mp3 codec that will fix the problem?

Like Phaeron explains, the problem is with his program, Virtualdub which uses the frauhofer MP3 decoder and the only solution is to ignore the error message, direct stream copy the MP3 file to WAVE (which will be an MP3 with a .WAV extension), convert the file to PCM WAVE, reinsert into Virtualdub and recode.

You can have every possible MP3 codec and still get the error message.

I've just tested some other things and mu problems seems little bit different.

I've opened my file in Mainconcept MPEG encoder and tried to encode it from xvid to mpeg. Conversion resulted in creating *.mpeg files which has only 3 or 4 second of audio and then it is totally muted. I've tried it with another file to make sure that it is not the matter of broken *.avi file and the problem is the same. That happens only with the xvid files that are not editable in VirtualDub. For example DV files work perfectly with VirtualDub or MainconceptMPEGEncoder.

I have no problems with opening the same file on my notebook (I have there the same version of VirtualDub 1.5.10 build 18160/release and xvid 1.0.1).

I don't know what else to suggest.

You mentioned that you formatted C:\.

I had a bunch of XviDs on my C:\ and moved them to E:\ and reformatted C:\ and reinstalled Windows 2000 and when I went to move all the XviDs back to C:\, I noticed that everyone of the files got currupted somehow in the move.

They were all upside down and looked like they had been recompressed waaaaay too much. Not sure why but I was lucky enough to have saved the same files to data discs so I didn't lose all the files. You might try copying the files from the Notebook to the PC and see if they work.
